The Arizona Diamondbacks are expected to consider trade offers for Ketel Marte this offseason as questions about his relationship with the organization persist.
The Arizona Diamondbacks could be approaching a significant turning point with Ketel Marte as the organization prepares to consider trade opportunities involving its longtime second baseman.
After previously exploring the possibility of moving Marte last offseason, Arizona appears increasingly open to the idea of parting ways with the three-time All-Star. According to Alex Weiner of The Arizona Republic, the Diamondbacks have already received preliminary interest from other teams as the offseason trade market begins to develop.
General manager Mike Hazen has acknowledged the possibility of making changes to the roster after Arizona narrowly missed the postseason for the third consecutive year.
Speaking with Piecoro, Hazen indicated that the organization believes some adjustments are necessary after keeping much of its core together for an extended period.
The comments follow public criticism from members of the Diamondbacks' leadership regarding Marte's availability and conduct throughout the past several seasons.
Owner Ken Kendrick expressed frustration earlier in October, saying he hoped Marte would address what he described as repeated immaturity. Manager Torey Lovullo also suggested he would take a different approach toward the infielder rather than continuing to defend him publicly.
Marte's relationship with Arizona faces questions
Marte's standing within the organization has become an increasingly important part of his trade candidacy.
In August 2026, Marte did not report for a scheduled game against the Boston Red Sox. He was reportedly dealing with discomfort in his left knee and frustration over the situation, but did not initially communicate his absence to the organization.
The Diamondbacks subsequently placed him on the restricted list before transferring him to the injured list. Marte missed approximately two weeks before returning to the lineup and apologizing.
Production, contract complicate trade discussions
Marte's performance also creates questions about his current market value.
The 33-year-old finished the 2026 campaign with 22 home runs and a .249/.316/.432 slash line across 624 plate appearances. Those numbers represented a step backward from his previous production, particularly considering his standing as one of baseball's most productive second basemen earlier in the decade.
From 2021 through 2025, Marte established himself as an impact offensive player, hitting .279 with a .360 on-base percentage and .498 slugging percentage. His performance also earned him a third-place finish in National League MVP voting in 2023.
However, potential suitors must also consider his remaining contract. Marte is under contract for five additional seasons, with $87.5 million remaining. His salary increases considerably beginning in 2028, creating another consideration for teams evaluating a potential trade.
There is also a significant obstacle to completing a deal. Marte acquired 10-and-5 rights in April, giving him the ability to veto any trade because of his service time and tenure with Arizona.
That means the Diamondbacks cannot simply move him without his approval.
