Adrian Del Castillo's two-run home run paced three-run 10th inning as Arizona Diamondbacks beat Baltimore Orioles 8-5.
Adrian Del Castillo put on his Superman cape on Wednesday, playing a big role in helping the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-5 in 10 innings at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore.
Del Castillo blasted a two-run home run in the top of the 10th inning off of Baltimore reliever Tyler Wells, putting the Diamondbacks up 7-5 at that point.
In total, Del Castillo collected five RBIs against the Orioles.
Want more numbers from Arizona's day at the plate? How about Ildemaro Vargas extending his hitting streak to 12 games. Vargas did it on a bunt single in the second inning. Vargas also doubled in the top of the 10th, scoring on Nolan Arenado's single to give the Diamondbacks an 8-5 lead.
Corbin Carroll Doubles Twice
Wells took the loss for the Orioles.
Corbin Carroll had two doubles against Baltimore and scored two runs.
Meanwhile, Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez just didn't have a solid outing. Rodriguez went five innings, allowed six hits, four runs (all earned), walked four, and struck out three.
Ryan Thompson, the fourth Diamondbacks pitcher used by manager Torey Lovullo, picked up the victory. Juan Morillo worked the 10th inning and earned his first save this season.
Sam Huff's two-out double in the second inning drove home Coby Mayo to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the third, the Diamondbacks responded with two runs. Del Castillo's triple brough in Carroll and Geraldo Perdomo for a 2-1 Arizona edge. Jeremiah Jackson's two-out RBI single scored Pete Alonso for the Orioles and tied things up at 2-2.
Jorge Barrosa's two-out double, his seventh double this season, brought home Alek Thomas and the Diamondbacks reclaimed a 3-2 edge in the top of the fourth. But the Orioles' Jackson responded with a two-run homer in the home half of the fourth. That gave Baltimore a 4-3 edge at that time.
Then, in the top of the sixth inning, Thomas' RBI groundout scored Jose Fernandez and tied the game again at 4-4. Del Castillo's RBI groundout in the top of the seventh gave the Diamondbacks a 5-4 lead. Leody Taveras smacked an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning, tying the game at 5-5.
Four D-backs Had Two Hits Each
All of that set up the Diamondbacks for their three-run 10th inning.
Del Castillo, Carroll, Arenado, and Vargas all had two hits against Baltimore pitching.
The Diamondbacks won three straight series on their East Coast road trip. They come home to Chase Field in Phoenix with an 11-8 record. That puts Arizona in third place in the always competitive National League West Division.
Baltimore goes to 9-9 with the loss, putting the Orioles in third place in the American League East Division.
Arizona gets a day off on Thursday, a much-deserved one, before opening a three-game series at home against the Toronto Blue Jays.
