An eight-run first inning for Toronto Blue Jays provided plenty of cushion in 10-4 win over Arizona Diamondbacks.

It was bad enough on Sunday at Chase Field that the Toronto Blue Jays put up an eight spot in the top of the first inning. They rode that to an eventual 10-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Diamondbacks, though, had other concerns on their minds. Corbin Carroll, one day after hitting a grand slam that helped Arizona defeat Toronto, left Sunday's game with a back issue.

More on that later. First, though, what happened on Sunday afternoon?

Diamondbacks starting pitcher Ryne Nelson had a game to forget. He only managed to retire one Blue Jays batter, giving up eight hits, eight runs (all earned), walked one, and got the only out he recorded on a strikeout. Nelson took the loss and saw his ERA soar to 6.97.

With nobody out, Vladimir Guerrero's two-run single put the Blue Jays up 2-0. They were just getting started. Six runs later, Toronto led 8-0 and Nelson was headed to the showers.

Andrew Hoffmann came on to relieve Nelson and worked 2 1/3 innings. Hoffmann gave up two hits, one run (earned), walked one, and struck out three. Brandon Pfaadt, coming out of the bullpen these days, worked 6 1/3 innings, giving up four hits, one run (earned), walked two, and struck out three.

Meanwhile, Toronto starter Kevin Gausman put on a pitching clinic on Sunday. He worked six innings, giving up seven hits, two runs (both earned), walked one, and struck out four. Three Blue Jays relievers followed Gausman and worked one effective inning apiece.

The Diamondbacks scored single runs in the second and sixth innings. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Jorge Barrosa hit his first home run this season, a two-run shot, that edged Arizona a bit closer at 10-4.

That's how the game ended, though.

Now, all eyes turned to Carroll when he was removed from Sunday's game in the fourth inning due to back tightness. A story from MLB.com indicates that television cameras caught Carroll grimacing after taking a swing at the plate. When he was back in the outfield in the top of the fourth inning, cameras caught Carroll stretching out his back.

Barrosa entered the game in the top of the fifth inning, replacing Carroll. Reports indicate, though, that there are not concerns about Carroll's health at this point.

With the loss, the Diamondbacks fall to 13-9 this season and sit in third place in the National League West Division. The Blue Jays go to 8-13 on the season and are in fourth place in the American League East Division.

It's been a tough start to the 2026 MLB season for the Blue Jays, who reached the World Series last season.

After taking Monday off, the Diamondbacks welcome the Chicago White Sox to Chase Field in Downtown Phoenix for a three-game series. Once the White Sox head out of town, the San Diego Padres come in for another three-game set. That'll be a National League West Division showdown worth keeping an eye on, Diamondbacks fans.
