Despite a low-scoring game, Michael Soroka helps Arizona Diamondbacks edge past Atlanta Braves 2-1.
The Arizona Diamondbacks wanted to get back on the winning track on Saturday against the Atlanta Braves. Behind a solid five-inning start from Michael Soroka, the Diamondbacks did just that and picked up a 2-1 win at Chase Field.
While fans attending Saturday's game might have wanted to see a lot of runs on the board, the Diamondbacks and Braves only combined for three runs. Arizona, though, managed to put two runs on the board in the second inning. That proved to be the difference as both teams also combined for just eight hits.
In the top of the second, Dominic Smith's single to left field brought home Mike Yastrzemski for a 1-0 Atlanta lead. Smith managed to make it to second base, but didn't score.
Then, the Diamondbacks, thanks to a defensive lapse by the Braves, took their 2-1 lead. With one out, Jose Fernandez put down a bunt single. Braves pitcher Bryce Elder picked up the ball, but threw it wildly for an error. Gabriel Moreno and Nolan Arenado scored, giving Arizona a 2-1 lead.
Fernandez reached second base on the play, too.
After the second inning, though, neither the Braves nor Diamondbacks were able to put more runs on the board.
Ahead of Saturday's game, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo mentioned that he wanted to see more of an offensive outburst from his team. Arizona hasn't really been burning it up at the plate so far this season.
Yet the Diamondbacks did just enough to beat the Braves.
Soroka worked five innings, allowing four hits, and one run (earned). He walked three and struck out three en route to picking up his second win this season. Lovullo used five pitchers in the game, with Paul Sewald working the ninth inning for his third save.
Elder rebounded quite nicely after the second-inning miscue. He went seven innings, giving up four hits and two runs (unearned). Elder walked one and struck out eight Diamondbacks, proving that he has the ability to be a dominant pitcher for the Braves.
Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno went 2-for-3 in the game.
Soroka's ERA is now at 0.90 after Saturday's contest. As for Elder, his ERA sits at 0.00. Talk about a couple of pitchers coming on strong for their teams early this season.
The Dbacks and Braves will wrap up their series at Chase Field on Sunday afternoon. First pitch at Chase Field is set for 3:10 p.m. ET (1:10 p.m. MT). After Sunday's game, Arizona will have a day off on Monday.
But the team will head east for a mid-week series against the New York Mets, followed by a weekend series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
With a win on Sunday, the Diamondbacks can get back to the .500 mark. After Saturday's games, Arizona sits 2.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West Division.
It's still early. The Diamondbacks need to find a way to pick their offense up, though. The Mets and Phillies have strong lineups and know how to stir it up at the plate. So, the Diamondbacks will have their work cut out for them on their upcoming road trip.
