Arizona Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen was impressive against Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal. D-backs win 1-0.
What a Wednesday afternoon at Chase Field for Arizona Diamondbacks fans. Not only did they see Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen make his first start, but Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal took the mound.
Who won this battle? It turned out that Gallen was the man with a winning plan as the Diamondbacks defeated the Tigers 1-0, finishing off a three-game sweep.
It's quite a turnaround for Arizona, who got its overall record to .500 at 3-3. Entering Thursday night's lone MLB game for the Los Angeles Dodgers, the D-backs are 1.5 games behind the Dodgers in the National League West Division.
Gallen went six scoreless innings, keeping the Tigers' offense in check.
The game's only run came in the first inning as Corbin Carroll hit a solo home run off Skubal, who is one of MLB's great pitchers these days. After Gallen left the game, the Diamondbacks entrusted relievers Taylor Clarke, Juan Morillo, and Jonathan Loáisiga to secure the victory. Loáisiga earned his first save this season.
But let's not dismiss Skubal's effort in the Valley of the Sun. He pitched seven innings of one-run ball, allowing six hits, striking out three, and not giving up a walk.
Skubal was great, but the Tigers' offense was not at all.
Besides hitting his first-inning home run, Carroll went 2-for-3 on Wednesday.
While it would probably be nice for the D-backs to have a day off on Friday, that's not going to happen. They are back at it at Chase Field on Thursday night as the Atlanta Braves come to town. This kicks off a four-game series between these two teams.
First pitch on Thursday night is 8:40 p.m. ET (6:40 p.m. MT) while Friday night's game is scheduled to begin at 8:45 p.m. ET (6:45 p.m. MT). Saturday and Sunday are afternoon contests. The D-backs head out on the road with a travel day on Monday, going to New York for a series against the New York Mets at Citi Field.
Dodgers Claim Grant Holman Off Waivers
Late Wednesday, news broke that the Los Angeles Dodgers have claimed pitcher Grant Holman off waivers from the Diamondbacks. The Dodgers posted about the transaction on their X account.
Holman comes on board for the Dodgers after Los Angeles placed right-handed pitcher Gavin Stone on the 60-day Injured List.
