Ketel Marte, Corbin Carroll go deep back-to-back, Vargas extends hit streak as Arizona Diamondbacks sink Milwaukee Brewers.
Can anyone in the major leagues cool off Ildemaro Vargas? The answer, right now, is no.
Vargas went 2-for-5, extended his consecutive game hit streak to 25 games over two seasons, and the Arizona Diamondbacks secured a 6-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field.
In the top of the ninth inning, with Arizona holding on to a 4-2 lead, Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll went deep back-to-back and helped secure the win. Marte and Carroll joined the home run party started earlier by Adrian Del Castillo and Nolan Arenado.
Before getting into some other details of Thursday's big road victory, let's take a long look at what Vargas has done at this time.
According to MLB.com, Vargas' 22-game hit streak to open the 2026 MLB season is currently tied for the third-longest streak to open an MLB season since 1940. Former St. Louis Cardinals catcher Joe Torre, when he was an active player in the majors, hit in 22 straight games to open the 1971 season.
Former Atlanta Braves star Edgar Renteria put up a 23-game hit streak back in 2006. But Detroit Tigers legend Ron LeFlore, back in the bicentennial MLB season of 1976, started that season with a 30-game straight hit streak.
So, Vargas is getting his name into some pretty strong names in MLB history.
Diamondbacks starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez had a decent start but didn't provide length for Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo on Wednesday night. Rodriguez worked 4 1/3 innings, giving up five hits, two runs (both earned), walked four, and struck out four.
Reliever Kevin Ginkel, the first pitcher out of the Arizona bullpen, worked 1 1/3 innings of relief and notched his first victory this season. Ginkel's overall record now stands at 1-1. He allowed one hit, no runs, didn't walk a batter, and struck out three Brewers.
Juan Morillo and Taylor Clarke followed Ginkel and picked up holds. Then, Paul Sewald worked a clean ninth inning, striking out one, to close out the victory.
Brewers starter Brandon Sproat took the loss, falling to 0-2. Sproat worked for 4 1/3 innings, giving up six hits, four runs (all earned), walked two, and struck out five. But Sproat also gave up two home runs in his outing.
Reliever Grant Anderson worked the ninth, giving up those homers to Marte and Carroll.
With Milwaukee up 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning, Del Castillo smashed a solo home run, his second home run this season, to pull the Diamondbacks within 2-1. Del Castillo did that with one out. Then, with runners on first and second with one out, Arenado put the D-backs up 4-2 with a three-run blast.
That was Arenado's fifth home run this season, bringing home Vargas and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. ahead of him. And then, in the ninth, Marte hit his fifth homer this season and Carroll connected for his fourth homer this season, too.
The Wednesday night victory for the Diamondbacks puts them at 16-13 overall and in third place in the National League West Division. With the loss, the Brewers drop to 15-14 and are in fourth place in the National League Central Division.
On Thursday, the Diamondbacks and Brewers close out their series against the Brewers. First pitch will be around brunch time in the Valley of the Sun at 10:40 a.m. MT (12:40 p.m. ET).
