Six-run seventh inning, led by Tim Tawa's grand slam, helped carry Arizona Diamondbacks over San Diego Padres.

Maybe the Arizona Diamondbacks wanted to celebrate before leaving Mexico City, Mexico on Sunday night.

Well, they had a great reason to do so. The Diamondbacks put together a six-run seventh inning and rallied past the San Diego Padres 12-7 in the final game of the two-game Mexico City Series.

Tim Tawa had the table set for him to provide the big blast.

Seventh Heaven for Diamondbacks

To open the seventh, with one out in the inning, José Fernández, Nolan Arenado and Alek Thomas all hit singles. Earlier in the game, Fernández hit a solo home run.

That set things up for Tawa, who smoked a David Morgan pitch over the left-field wall. Everybody scored, pushing the Diamondbacks closer.

But the Snakes weren't through scoring.

Padres reliever Bradgley Rodriguez surrendered a double to Ildemaro Vargas, who stretched his consecutive games hit streak to 23. With two outs, Corbin Carroll coaxed a walk and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. followed with a two-run double.

Leave it to Lourdes to put the Diamondbacks in the lead.

Red-Hot Vargas

How hot is Vargas? Not as hot as a summer in the Valley of the Sun, but pretty dang close.

Vargas fell just a single short of hitting for the cycle on Sunday. He ended up going 3-for-5, connecting for a bases-loaded triple in the eighth inning. When Vargas hit a solo home run in the sixth off of Padres pitcher Michael King, that extended his hit streak.

It goes all the way back to the 2025 MLB season. Right now, Vargas has the longest hitting streak in the major leagues since Bryan Reynolds put together a 25-game hitting streak back in June 2024, according to the Associated Press.

Bullpen Delivers

Diamondbacks pitcher Ryan Thompson worked a scoreless seventh inning en route to getting the victory. Thompson is now 2-0 as the MLB season rolls along.

Lovullo Enjoyed Experience

It's not every day that an MLB club gets to play internationally. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo enjoyed spending time and playing in Mexico City.

“[It is] an international sport,” Lovullo said, according to MLB.com. “It brings countries together, brings personalities together [and] for us to come and play in front of this amazing baseball community that supports baseball this way … it is something I'll never forget and I think the players feel the same way.”

For Lovullo, it also must have felt good to board that plane out of Mexico City with a victory in his back pocket.

“It's a great win for this team,” Lovullo said. “Over some really rugged, tough circumstances, these guys continue to fight, and that's our DNA, that's part of our culture, to never give in. It looked bleak, but we continued fighting and winning a very important game.”

Coming Up

The Diamondbacks get a day off on Monday, but open a series on Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field.

Merrill Kelly, who is 1-1 this season with a 9.31 ERA, gets the start for Arizona.
