The Seattle Mariners earned their sixth straight win, defeating Arizona Diamondbacks with 10th-inning rally for 3-2 victory.
The Arizona Diamondbacks had plenty of reasons to be sleepless in Seattle this weekend. But, Sunday's 3-2, 10-inning loss to the Seattle Mariners might make them even more sleepless.
With the victory, the Mariners finished off a series sweep over the Diamondbacks. If that wasn't bad enough, Seattle has now won six straight games.
Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly went 5.1 innings for manager Torey Lovullo. He gave up two earned runs, eight hits, walked two, struck out two, and surrendered two home runs. Kelly now has a 5.06 ERA this season.
Bullpen Good Until 10th Inning for D-backs
Three Arizona relievers kept the Mariners' bats in check. That, though, changed in the bottom of the 10th inning with Jonathan Loaisiga on the mound. He absorbed the loss on Sunday, falling to 1-2 overall.
Well, here's how that 10th inning went for the Mariners. Seattle's Randy Arozarena was the designated runner at second base. Luke Raley was intentionally walked, putting runners at first and second base.
Cole Young, who earlier homered in the second inning, put down a sacrifice bunt to third base. Arozarena moved up to third base and Raley went to second base. Victor Robles came up and played hero, singling in Arozarena and that set off a celebration at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
Bryce Miller opened the game for the Mariners, who were in a piggybacking situation for their pitchers. Miller went five innings, giving up no earned runs, walked one, and struck out six as he lowered his ERA to 1.71.
Luis Castillo came on in the sixth inning. He suffered a blown save opportunity, but eventually picked up the win to go to 2-5 this season. Castillo worked five innings, too, giving up two runs (one earned), two hits, walked two, and struck out three Diamondbacks.
Young's fourth homer this season in the bottom of the second put Seattle up 1-0.
Arizona tied the game in the top of the sixth inning. Ketel Marte walked with one out and Corbin Carroll followed with a double, putting runners at second and third base. Castillo threw a wild pitch, bringing home Marte and tying the game at 1-1.
Seattle answered in the bottom of the sixth on Dominic Canzone's seventh home run this season, a solo shot, and the Mariners retook the lead at 2-1.
Naylor Error Helps Diamondbacks Tie Game
The Diamondbacks tied things up again in the top of the eighth. Gabriel Moreno led off with a single. Tim Tawa followed by putting down a sacrifice bunt, but Mariners first baseman Josh Naylor committed a throwing error. Moreno went to third base and Tawa found himself on second base.
Marte's sacrifice fly scored Moreno and that made it 2-2 at that point
Everything then was set up for the Mariners, after the Diamondbacks were retired in the top of the 10th inning, to pull off a rally and get the victory.
The Diamondbacks fall to 31-27 and sit in third place in the National League West Division. The Mariners are now 31-29 and are in first place in the American League West Division.
Arizona boarded a plane after the game and headed home to Phoenix. The Diamondbacks kick off a four-game series at Chase Field in Downtown Phoenix on Monday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
