Diamondbacks' Moreno Joins Elite Company After Winning Gold Glove
Nov 2, 2026 3:21 AM

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno cements his legacy by matching a rare Joe Mauer feat.

For just the second time in MLB history, a catcher has won both the batting title and a Gold Glove Award in the same season.

The Arizona Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno joins Joe Mauer as the dynamic duo of backstops that went on to make history.

For what it's worth, Mauer won the batting title and a Gold Glove in both 2008 and 2009, but who's to say Moreno can't replicate these results in 2027?

Moreno joins fellow teammates Geraldo Perdomo (shortstop) and Corbin Carroll (right field) as award winners here in 2026.

Officially, that trio ties the D-backs franchise record with three Gold Glove winners in the same season. According to AZSports' Alex Weiner, the only other time it happened was in 2019.

Moreno's breakout year was a thing of beauty

Moreno, 26, won his first Gold Glove in 2023 which just so happened to be his first year with the D-backs.

It took three years, but he was able to win the award again, doing so in the same season when he hit .311, a mark that paced the National League.

The Venezuelan native slashed .311/.388/.486 this season with a .874 OPS.

He was a 6.7 WAR player, a number that was his career best, by far. For reference, when he won his first Gold Glove in '23, Moreno was only a 4.3 WAR player.

His DWAR rating this season clocked in at 2.0. Throughout his five-year career, he's now blossomed into an everyday catcher, though he's also played second and third base along with left field.

After a year where he caught 886.0 innings, Moreno had a stellar .996% fielding percentage, though obviously that number is a lot different for catchers compared to the rest of these Gold Glove winners across other positions.

Moreno caught 14 runners stealing this year, but his 14-for-42 clip was nowhere near the 22-for-35 he was at three years ago.

To say Moreno's catching abilities have decreased is a stretch, rather it shows just how good he was in '23 with a 3.1 DWAR rating.

Diamondbacks' Carroll ends the team's big night

Perdomo was the first player to be honored with a Gold Glove this season, and then Moreno followed.

Moreno caught a ton of attention as he's now in the same conversation as Mauer, but the D-backs night came to a close with Carroll winning his first Gold Glove Award.

Together, this trio would've loved to make the playoffs, but this is a solid consolation prize after the year everyone went through.
