Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks was placed on the restricted list just before his team's game against the Boston Red Sox.
Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte was placed on the restricted list by the ballclub on Monday night.
Marte reportedly was expected to be at Fenway Park on Monday night when the Diamondbacks opened a series against the Boston Red Sox.
Diamondbacks beat reporter Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic offered some details behind Marte's absence in a couple of social media posts.
"Ketel Marte did not show up to Fenway Park tonight," Piecoro wrote in a post on X. "Marte arrived here in Boston with the team. The club had hoped until shortly before game time that he was going to show up to the park. He had been expected to serve as the designated hitter for tonight's game."
Piecoro later reported that he was told Marte is doing OK physically, but he just didn’t show up to the ballpark on Monday night.
After Marte was placed on the restricted list, the Diamondbacks called up infielder Jose Fernandez from Triple-A Reno.
Just before first pitch against Boston, the Diamondbacks got their lineup in minutes before the game started. Marte was not in the lineup or on the roster card.
At this point, there are no further explicit details around Marte's reasons for not being at Fenway Park.
Marte has been one player that the Diamondbacks have been looking toward to help the team continue to march toward a postseason spot.
Not having Marte there meant Arizona manager Torey Lovullo had to quickly determine what he should do in his lineup on Monday night.
Longtime Arizona radio host John Gambadoro offered some additional details to the Marte disappearance from the team's game at Fenway Park.
"From what I was just told from a source in Boston - Ketel Marte was not at Fenway Park for batting practice," Gambodero wrote in a post on X. "Do not know the reason why or anything more at this time. Again, all I could gather was that he was not there for BP.
"Had to be something out of the ordinary to delay the lineup for that long and this transaction was not part of the daily transactions the Diamondbacks released at 1 pm today," he continued. "This was just announced 10 minutes before the game started."
Marte is hitting .249 with 21 home runs and 67 RBIs this season. He also has a .249 batting average, a .446 slugging percentage, and a .760 OPS. Marte has 23 doubles and three triples this season for Arizona.
