On Thursday night, the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 10-6.

The win marks the team's eighth win in 10 games, including a series sweep over the two-time reigning champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers, before the All-Star break.

Arizona is now 54-49, second in the National League West, and in the mix for a Wild Card playoff spot after a slow start to the season and struggles to remain consistent.

However, even though the D-backs are on a hot streak, team president and CEO Derrick Hall does not want the team to become complacent and admits that this success will not continue.

"We're not going to continue playing at that clip, and teams around us are not going to continue playing at a level of mediocrity either," Hall claimed on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM radio.

Some fans might view this as harsh for Hall to say after the team goes on a heater, but it may be the motivation the team needs.

Regardless of the motives Hall had in mind before making these comments, the comments could make many question the faith he actually has in his team.

To Hall's point, maintaining the level of play needed to continue winning at their current level is difficult for many reasons, but the second part of Hall's comments is head-scratching. It seems Hall believes the team is performing well only because other teams are underperforming.

Even though Arizona may play teams that don't have the best records, that still doesn't support Hall's statement.

Much like any other hot streak, it's far more complicated to explain the reason for a hot stretch than simply saying a team is playing well; multiple factors have to align in a team's favor.

However, just because a team is on a roll doesn't necessarily mean opponents are playing poorly. Arizona also might look to be active at the MLB Trade Deadline, which comes up on Aug. 3.

The Diamondbacks, at various points throughout the season, made their efforts to improve their offense known before the winning stretch, and that has been critical to the team turning things around.

While it could be true that the bats may not keep rolling as they are currently, whenever a team catches rhythm, it is difficult for them to cool down, so it is not far-fetched for the Diamondbacks to continue their stellar play.

Over the next two series, the Diamondbacks face the Washington Nationals and the Pittsburgh Pirates to end the month of July, before a homestand against division opponents, the Dodgers and the San Diego Padres, in the first week of August.

If Arizona can find a way to keep the momentum they have heading into August, it sets them up well for that postseason push as the season winds down.
