With their postseason hopes hanging by a thread, Arizona turns to a trio of desperate arms to silence San Diego’s bats and secure a playoff miracle.
The Arizona Diamondbacks may not have expected to be in this position come Sept. 25, but there's still a world where they can make the playoffs.
After improving to 85-74 thanks to a sweep over the Colorado Rockies, this team is as motivated as they've been all year long.
There may be 162 games in the regular season, but moments like these prove why every single one matters.
The ramifications of a random loss on June 27 are on full display with the clock ticking on Arizona's playoff chances, and all they can do now is rely on these three starters to get the job done.
Brandon Pfaadt looks to set the tone
Brandon Pfaadt is coming off a strong 4.1-inning performance where he gave up just one earned run on four hits.
He only struck out three batters which was his lowest total this month, but it's a month where his 5.19 ERA doesn't look so great compared to the 3.72 it is from his 28 appearances this year.
Pfaadt, 27, is being asked to make his 19th start at the most crucial time. One loss will ruin everything for this organization, and that's a lot for someone to have to manage mentally, especially against a division rival.
Can Corbin Burnes put together a quality start?
With the way things have gone for Corbin Burnes since he came back from the Injured List, the San Diego Padres must be foaming at the mouth.
This is a former Cy Young Award winner who simply hasn't been himself, but that should've been expected upon his return from a major injury.
Burnes, 31, is a -0.3 WAR player in his first three starts of the year. He's only managed to throw 10.1 innings, and he's given up nine earned runs in that span.
The California native was built for moments like these, so it'll be interesting to see how things go down in game two of a season defining series.
Michael Soroka pitches the season finale
Who knows if the season will be on the line by this point, but if it is, the D-backs will have Michael Soroka ready to go.
Soroka, 29, picked up a win in the series opener against the Rockies.
Not only did he pick up the win, but he threw seven innings of nearly flawless baseball, allowing only one earned run on two hits.
It marked his fourth start to go seven innings this year, and that's exactly the kind of start Arizona would love to have in Game No. 162.
