Arizona Diamondbacks starter Eduardo Rodriguez threw eight-plus innings of four-hit ball in downing New York Mets 4-1.
All that the Arizona Diamondbacks really needed on Sunday afternoon at Chase Field were Eduardo Rodriguez and Ryan Waldschmidt. Rodriguez provided the pitching and Waldschmidt provided the hitting in a 4-1 victory over the New York Mets.
With the win, the Diamondbacks took two of three games in the weekend series.
Rodriguez was incredible on Sunday. He retired the first 15 Mets batters in a row and had all of his pitches working. New York only scored one run in the sixth inning. Beyond that, the Arizona starter was on fire. Rodriguez, now 4-0 this season, walked three and struck out four in his outing.
Waldschmidt, just called up from Triple-A before the weekend series started, had a career day at the plate. Waldschmidt was 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs, and a run scored. He's hitting .375 right now and is making his name known to Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo and the coaching staff.
Mets starter Huascar Brazoban took the loss and falls to 2-1 this season. Brazoban didn't allow a hit but gave up two earned runs, walked three, and didn't strike out a batter. New York pitcher David Peterson worked the bulk of the innings on Sunday, going five innings against Arizona.
Peterson gave up four hits and three runs, but none of the runs were earned. He struck out three Arizona hitters and didn't walk a batter.
In the bottom of the second inning with runners and second and third base, Waldschmidt doubled to center. Ildemaro Vargas and Nolan Arenado scored on the hit, putting the Diamondbacks up 2-0.
Luis Torrens' double to right field brought home Carson Benge and the Mets cut into the Diamondbacks' lead in the top of the sixth. Arizona, though, still held a 2-1 lead.
What hurt the Mets the most on Sunday? Their defense. The Mets committed three errors against Arizona. They'd come back to haunt New York. With two outs and runners at first and second base for the Diamondbacks, Waldschmidt singled to center.
Vargas scored and Jorge Barrosa moved to third base, putting Arizona up 3-1 at that point. Ketel Marte then came up and smoked a triple to right field, bringing home Barrosa and Waldschmidt for a 5-1 Arizona lead.
The Mets only had four hits and left six runners on base. As for the Diamondbacks, they were 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left three on base.
Arizona goes back to one game below .500 at 19-20 for the season, putting the D-backs in third place in the National League West Division. The Mets, who have been struggling early in the 2026 MLB season, fall 10 games under .500 at 15-25 and sit in fifth place in the National League East Division.
The Diamondbacks headed out to the Lone Star State after Sunday's game as they open a three-game series against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field in Arlington on Monday night.
