While Geraldo Perdomo gets some notoriety from The Athletic, Arizona Diamondbacks drop to No. 22 in MLB rankings list.
As the Arizona Diamondbacks enjoy a Thursday off after a very successful road trip, they're sitting among the lower third of MLB teams right now.
Each week, The Athletic produces an article filled with all 30 MLB clubs in its MLB Power Rankings. The Diamondbacks find themselves in the No. 22 spot, slipping two spots from the previous week's data.
While this positioning took place on Monday, it really doesn't reflect how well the Diamondbacks have been playing lately.
Anytime a ballclub goes on the road and puts together wins like Arizona did, that positioning probably will get adjusted when the next power rankings are released.
The Athletic, though, did give Geraldo Perdomo his flowers.
"Perdomo is on the José Ramírez career path, where he’s on every 'most underrated' list until it’s clear that he’s on a Hall of Fame trajectory, at which point he becomes very properly rated," The Athletic's Grant Brisbee wrote.
"He’s one of the best players you don’t think about that often, someone who gives the Diamondbacks a possible-if-distant chance to catch the Dodgers," Brisbee continued.
The Arizona shortstop has a slash line right now of .194/.274/.581 with two doubles, one home run, and four RBIs. Perdomo has gone 12-for-62 at the plate. He's scored nine runs for the Diamondbacks while playing a pretty solid shortstop for manager Torey Lovullo.
"At the moment, however, he is awful, making outs at the plate and on the bases, and leading all baseball with five double plays hit into," Brisbee wrote. "This will not continue, and the Diamondbacks — still performing well enough — have something to look forward to."
Perdomo will get better in time. Brisbee is right. If Diamondbacks fans can be patient with him right now, those patient days probably will pay off down the road.
Lovullo obviously thinks a lot of Perdomo. His teammates also appear to be supportive of his play, too, even with those rough edges showing up at times.
Thankfully, the Diamondbacks will not have to think about going on the road anytime soon. They're going to open up a three-game series at Chase Field in Downtown Phoenix on Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The D-backs will have another day off on Monday, so they can have some time away from the ballpark if they want to do so.
After the Blue Jays head out of the Valley of the Sun, the Chicago White Sox come into town for another three-game series.
Then, Arizona's business in the National League West Division picks up on Friday, April 25, when Fernando Tatis Jr. and the San Diego Padres go at it at Chase Field. That ought to be a series worth watching as the Diamondbacks and Padres look to gain footing in the division at this time.
Diamondbacks fans shouldn't be too worried about the ranking spot at this time. There's plenty of season left and the D-backs appear to be back on the road to being a contender in the NL West this season.
