The Arizona Diamondbacks got fat off of the bottom teams in the National League West Division, going 11-2 in a 13-game stretch in facing the Colorado Rockies and San Francisco Giants.

On Wednesday afternoon at Oracle Park by the Bay in San Francisco, the Diamondbacks recorded a 3-2 victory. There wasn't a whole lot of offense taking place on the field, but a Matt Gage error led the way to Arizona going in front for good.

Diamondbacks starter Michael Soroka worked six innings of four-hit ball, improving to 7-2 this season. He gave up two earned runs, didn't walk anyone, and struck out three as Soroka now has a 3.25 ERA.

Trevor McDonald absorbed the loss for the Giants, evening his record at 2-2. McDonald gave up three runs (two earned), six hits, walked two, and struck out six Arizona batters.

With Wednesday's series-clinching victory, the Diamondbacks are now seven games above .500 at 31-24 and in second place in the NL West. As for the Giants, well, they are now 12 games below .500 at 22-34. They are in fourth place as only the Rockies have a worse record in the division.

San Francisco broke on top in the bottom of the third inning as Luis Arraez's two-run single scored Drew Gilbert and Willy Adames. That was it, though, for the Giants' offensive output in front of their home fans.

In the top of the sixth, Corbin Carroll grounded into a forceout and reached first base on the play. Geraldo Perdomo then singled to right, putting runners at first and third. Adrian Del Castillo singled to left, bringing home Carroll and cutting into the San Francisco lead at 2-1.

A McDonald wild pitch moved Perdomo to third and Del Castillo to second. Ryan Waldschmidt then challenged a called third strike, and it was overturned. Waldschmidt went to first and that loaded up the bases. Ildemaro Vargas brought Perdomo home on a sacrifice fly, tying the game at 2-2.

The Diamondbacks then took the lead in the top of the seventh inning, thanks to Giants reliever Gage's miscue. Tommy Troy singled to right with one out. Ketel Marte followed with another single to right field, sending Giants manager Tony Vitello out to pull McDonald from the game and bring in Gage.

Carroll reached first base on Gage's throwing error and Troy and Marte moved up a base. With the bases loaded yet again, Perdomo's sacrifice fly brought Troy home and the Diamondbacks went up 3-2.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Giants were getting themselves in position to add to their run total.

With one out, Adames doubled to left field and reached second base. Luis Arraez singled to left field and Adames tried to score, but Waldschmidt hit the cut-off man in third baseman Jose Fernandez. Fernandez then threw a strike to catcher Aramis Garcia, who tagged Adames out. 

That ended up being a game-saving play by Waldschmidt, who continues to show that he's worthy of being in the big leagues. Arraez was at second base, but Diamondbacks reliever Kevin Ginkel caught Arraez straying a bit too far off the base and picked him off with a sweet throw to Marte at second.

It wasn't the best of games for the Giants as they are trying to find their footing with Vitello in his first year as a major-league manager.

Paul Sewald came on in the ninth inning for Arizona and shut the door on San Francisco, earning his 14th save this season.

The Diamondbacks will take a well-earned day off on Thursday. On Friday, Arizona opens a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. The two teams will play a Friday night game, followed by afternoon games on Saturday and Sunday.

Finally, as the calendar turns to June 1, the Diamondbacks will return to Chase Field and open a big series against the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.
