A sudden right hip injury sidelines Drey Jameson just as he regained his bullpen role with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Arizona Diamondbacks made an unexpected roster move less than an hour before first pitch against the Athletics on Tuesday night, placing right-handed reliever Drey Jameson on the 15-day Injured List because of right hip inflammation.
To fill the vacancy on the active roster, the Diamondbacks recalled right-hander Gerardo Carrillo from Triple-A Reno.
Carrillo had only recently been added to Arizona’s 40-man roster as part of the transaction that placed outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on the 10-day Injured List, allowing the organization to quickly turn to him following Jameson’s injury.
A bumpy road so far
For Jameson, the latest setback continues what has been a difficult journey through injuries during his professional career.
The hard-throwing reliever has already missed significant time because of multiple health issues, including Tommy John surgery that cost him the entire 2024 season.
He also dealt with another right elbow issue later in the 2025 season, delaying his path back to becoming a consistent contributor at the MLB level.
Entering 2026 fully healthy, Jameson appeared poised to put those setbacks behind him.
Although he struggled during spring training and posted an 8.44 ERA before being optioned, he continued working his way back. He eventually earned another opportunity with the Diamondbacks after being recalled on June 6.
Since returning to MLB, Jameson has filled an important role in Arizona’s bullpen. Working primarily in long relief and lower-leverage situations, he has posted a 4.67 ERA in 17.1 innings over 11 appearances.
While he has not been one of the team’s primary late-inning options, he has provided valuable innings for a pitching staff that has dealt with its share of challenges throughout the season.
Jameson most recently appeared in Sunday’s dramatic 8-7 walk-off comeback victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.
In that outing, he threw 42 pitches while covering more than two innings of relief work, once again demonstrating his willingness to take on multiple innings whenever the tam needed him.
At this point, it remains unclear exactly when Jameson suffered the right hip injury.
The Diamondbacks have not announced a timetable for his return, leaving uncertainty surrounding how long he will be unavailable.
Because the Injured List move was made retroactive to July 20, the earliest Jameson would be eligible to return is August 4.
In the meantime, Carrillo will receive an opportunity to contribute while Arizona evaluates Jameson’s recovery and determines when the right-hander will be ready to return to the bullpen.
A determined, hard-worker
Jameson has earned respect throughout the Diamondbacks organization because of the determination he has shown while repeatedly working his way back from injuries.
Rather than allowing setbacks to define his career, he has consistently approached rehabilitation with patience and persistence, earning another opportunity through hard work.
His powerful arm, competitive mentality, and willingness to accept any role have made him a valuable member of the pitching staff. He can protect leads or provide multiple innings in relief.
Coaches appreciate his resilience and professionalism. He could follow the Eduardo Rodríguez blueprint and have a breakout in the near future. His teammates recognize the effort required to return after significant injuries.
As he begins another recovery process, Jameson has already demonstrated that perseverance and commitment remain among his greatest strengths.
