Trailing by four games with a 3% postseason probability, the Arizona Diamondbacks faces a do-or-die stand at Coors Field.
There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it, if the Arizona Diamondbacks want to make the playoffs, they need to sweep the Colorado Rockies.
Just one loss puts them in danger of missing out on the playoffs, and even if the D-backs go 6-0 in their final six games, they could still very easily miss the cut.
According to ESPN, Arizona has just a 3% chance to make the playoffs. They're the only team remaining in the National League that's currently on the outside looking in, but the room for error is slim to none.
With six games remaining, the D-backs are four games back of the final NL Wild Card spot. Currently, the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres are both 87-69 while the Philadelphia Phillies are 86-70.
Tiebreakers mean everything at this point in the season, and it's well-documented that the Padres and D-backs are playing each other in the final series of the year.
Those three games could decide everything, but that all depends on what happens with the Diamondbacks in this three-game slate at Coors Field.
Michael Soroka takes the mound in game one
Michael Soroka may be 8-5 on the year, but he hasn't won a game since June 7. Obviously, it's worth noting he's only made seven starts since then, but it's still a bit alarming to see him making this start knowing he's dropped two of his last three.
Merrill Kelly will start game two
With the season practically on the line, the 37-year-old has a chance to keep Arizona's playoff hopes alive. Merrill Kelly has nearly played every game of his career with the Diamondbacks, and he'll start game two fresh off a 4.2-inning outing where he allowed three earned runs on seven hits.
Eduardo Rodriguez gets the finale
Sitting at 15-7 with a sub-3.00 ERA, the D-backs couldn't have asked for a better pitcher to be in the rotation down the stretch. There's a world where they would've loved to save Rodriguez for the Padres' series, but there's no point in moving things around when these Rockies games are just as important.
Diamondbacks need some help
Knowing this team is four games out, going 6-0 isn't going to cut it if the Phillies, Padres, or Cubs don't lose some games.
Arizona's best chance of making the postseason sees them win out, and then best case scenario the Phillies go 2-4 to make things as smooth as possible.
