Fresh off a three-year postseason drought, the Arizona Diamondbacks still decided to bring back Torey Lovullo.
The Arizona Diamondbacks may have just missed the playoffs, but they aren't ready to give up on Torey Lovullo.
At 61 years old, he was just brought back by the team under a two-year deal.
The question is, will he last both of those years?
Making the playoffs in 2027 is a start, though there's still a ton of uncertainty around whether or not there will even be a season.
Should it be business as usual, Lovullo's seat will be extremely hot if he gets off to a slow start and this team misses the postseason.
Lovullo was a 2013 World Series Champion with the Boston Red Sox, and while he was named the National League Manager of the Year in 2017, the question is: has he truly done enough to warrant this extension?
A closer look at Lovullo's resume
This is a guy who came to Arizona and immediately put forward a 93-69 record with the team. The NL West is no joke, and while he's never won the division, that's another goal for the near future, as it's been 15 years since that happened.
Regardless, Lovullo's World Series run in 2023 is well documented. The team only won one game, but even making it to that point is absolutely incredible.
How did he follow that season up, though? With an 89-73 campaign that resulted in the team missing the playoffs.
Remember, the D-backs were 84-78 when they made their World Series run, but somehow 89 wins was only good for third place in the division in 2024, and that ruined everything.
Lovullo put together an 80-win season in 2025, and then obviously he just went 86-76 with the team this year.
Missing out on the playoffs this season was a huge disappointment with how things were going down the stretch. The team simply needed to win one or two more games, and they would've been just fine, but instead, they've now missed the playoffs for three straight seasons.
Diamondbacks are rewarding mediocrity
There may not be a clear manager favorite out there for the team to currently bring in, but it feels like they're taking the easy way out by bringing Lovullo back.
He has a career .494 winning percentage with this team, and that's simply not going to cut it as this team plays in one of the toughest divisions in baseball.
Two teams in the NL West made it to the NLDS, and that just goes to show that the bar is set extremely high, but the D-backs are nowhere near that conversation with Lovullo leading the charge.
