In some MLB games, judging a game by its final score doesn't always tell the full story On Tuesday night at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, the Arizona Diamondbacks and St. Louis Cardinals played eight scoreless innings. 

Thanks to Nolan Arenado's contribution, the Diamondbacks put together a four-run ninth inning. With that, the game probably should have been over. But the Cardinals had some fight in themselves, too. They answered with three runs in their half of the ninth, but it wasn't enough as Arizona held on for a 4-3 win.

Before breaking down the ninth-inning antics, a big tip of the cap must be given to Diamondbacks starter Eduardo Rodriguez. He pitched 6.2 innings of three-hit ball, didn't allow an earned run, walked three, and struck out five. Rodriguez now has a pretty solid 2.27 ERA.

Cardinals starter Kyle Leahy was no pushover himself. Leahy went 6.1 innings, also giving up just three hits, no earned runs, walked two, and struck out three.

After Rodriguez and Leahy left, that put the rest of the game in the hands of both teams' bullpens. Kevin Ginkel worked a clean seventh inning and picked up the win, going to 4-2 this season. Brandyn Garcia came on in the bottom of the ninth, recorded the game's final out for his first save this season.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo sent closer Paul Sewald out to keep the Cardinals in check. Well, that didn't work out. Sewald went two-thirds of an inning, gave up four hits, three earned runs, didn't walk a batter, and struck out one. That led to Garcia coming into the game late.

St. Louis reliever Matt Svanson just didn't have it himself on Tuesday night, falling to 2-2 overall after picking up the loss. Svanson worked one-third of an inning in the ninth, giving up three hits, four runs (three earned), walked one, and struck out one.

Now, how in the world did this wild and crazy ninth inning go for Arizona? Svanson struck out Corbin Carroll for the inning's first out. Gabriel Moreno singled and moved to second on a Svanson wild pitch. Pavin Smith then walked, putting runners on first and second base with one out. Ildemaro Vargas came on to pinch-run for Smith.

Arenado came up to the plate against his old team, smashing a double to left field. Moreno scored and that gave the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead. Vargas reached third base. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. singled to center field, bringing home Vargas and Arenado for a 3-0 Arizona advantage.

Jorge Barrosa came on to pinch-run for Gurriel. A passed ball by Cardinals catcher Jimmy Crooks allowed Barrosa score what ended up being the game-winning run as the D-backs took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

This is where Sewald went off the rails on Tuesday night. Lars Nootbaar led off with a double as the ball tipped off left fielder Tommy Troy's glove. The Cardinals' Nathan Church struck out. Jose Fermin then singled to left, moving Nootbaar to third base.

Alec Burleson then came up and smashed a double, scoring Nootbaar and moving St. Louis closer at 4-1. Blaze Jordan followed with a sacrifice fly and the Cardinals added another run, making it 4-2.

Crooks made up for his passed ball with a single to right, bringing home Burleson and the Cardinals came all the way back to turn it into a one-run game at 4-3. Lovullo came out and got the ball from Sewald, turning to Garcia to record the final out.

Garcia struck out JJ Wetherholt and Arizona got out of the stadium with a victory.

Now, it's not like the Diamondbacks didn't have plenty of chances to score runs before the ninth-inning outburst. Arizona was 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left seven runners on base. St. Louis also left seven runners on base, but the Cardinals went 3-for 7 with runners in scoring position.

The Diamondbacks are now 40-39 in the National League West Division and look to pick up another win against St. Louis on Wednesday.
