Fresh off a historic shutout, the Arizona Diamondbacks bullpen looks fantastic, but inconsistent hitting remains a hurdle if this team wants to be a playoff contender.

The Arizona Diamondbacks just took care of business against the Philadelphia Phillies in a performance that once again showed this offense isn't up to par.

Regardless, a win is a win, even if it came in a 1-0 game.

If anything, that win proved just how good this team's pitching staff truly is. Throwing a nine-inning shutout with seven different pitchers hasn't ever been done before in franchise history, so that's a testament to how much fight these players have in them.

Offensively, the D-backs are going to need to produce at a much higher level if they want to earn that final National League Wild Card spot.

There are still quite a few series left to be played, so anything can happen, but General Manager Mike Hazen has no doubt this team will make their return to the postseason.

Hazen is "very confident" in the Diamondbacks

During a radio appearance with AZ Sports 98.7FM, Hazen told Dan Bickley and Vince Marotta that he's "very confident we're going to get into the playoffs."

Saying that on the radio is one thing, but actually proving it is another. Sure, the D-backs did just beat the Phillies, a team ESPN gives a 99.6% chance to make the playoffs, but there's a reason why that percentage is only at 50.8% for the Diamondbacks.

Consistency has been a major issue for Arizona. Time and time again, this team simply isn't able to string together quality wins when they need to.

They're not only coming off a series loss to the Phillies, but prior to that, they just split a four-game slate against the near-last-place San Francisco Giants.

Remember, the D-backs came into that series having just taken two of three against the Chicago Cubs, a team that is projected to have the top Wild Card spot in the NL.

If the Diamondbacks could win games more consistently and give their pitching staff more run support, this wouldn't even be a conversation.

Obviously, Hazen is confident in his team, and rightfully so. The flashes are there, no doubt, but when it comes down to it, do the Diamondbacks have what it takes to be good enough the rest of the month?

Only time will tell, but with Ketel Marte back in the lineup and a few starting pitchers on their way back from injury, this team is getting healthy at the perfect time, and they could be a sneaky contender, should everything go according to plan.
