Ketel Marte’s mysterious absence and social media activity have sparked organizational frustration and fan backlash, casting doubt on his long-term standing with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Ketel Marte returned to the Arizona Diamondbacks lineup Monday after a two-week absence that created questions about both his health and his relationship with the organization.
Marte unexpectedly failed to report for Arizona’s road game against the Boston Red Sox on Aug. 17.
His off-field activity added to the speculation when he liked a social media post suggesting he had already played his final game for the Diamondbacks.
A frustrating development
The situation clearly frustrated the organization.
It later emerged that Marte needed the time away to recover from an injury, although manager Torey Lovullo still sounded disappointed when discussing the 32-year-old infielder he has coached in Arizona since 2017.
Marte returned Monday at Chase Field to a mixed reception.
Some fans welcomed him back, while loud boos were heard when he came to the plate.
According to Bob Nightengale from USA TODAY, Lovullo was not surprised by the reaction after Marte left the team without an explanation.
The manager nevertheless believed Marte handled the adversity well.
Marte started at designated hitter and hit cleanup in Arizona’s 2-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.
That was the same role he had been scheduled to fill against Boston before his unexplained absence.
Marte later took accountability for leaving the team during an important stage of Arizona’s postseason pursuit.
The Diamondbacks still view him as an important part of the roster and were willing to welcome him back.
However, repeated unexplained absences could eventually force the organization to reconsider aspects of his future once the season ends.
Marte went 1-for-3 with a walk in Monday’s 2-1 loss.
He followed that by going 1-for-3 in Tuesday’s 7-1 defeat.
Arizona’s postseason hopes are still alive. They’ve lost three straight games but they’re just half a game behind the San Diego Padres for the last National League Wild Card spot.
Marte’s upside
For Arizona, Marte’s value remains difficult to separate from everything he can provide when fully engaged.
He is a polished hitter capable of controlling at-bats, handling different pitch types and producing from the middle of the lineup.
His switch-hitting ability creates matchup flexibility and makes him difficult for opposing managers to neutralize late in games.
Marte also brings extensive experience.
He has played under Lovullo for years, understands the expectations of the organization and has been through meaningful postseason games with Arizona.
That familiarity should make him one of the players teammates can rely on during high-pressure stretches.
His biggest challenge now is rebuilding trust through consistency.
Talent has never been the issue.
When focused and available, Marte gives the Diamondbacks a hitter with excellent bat-to-ball skills, power, patience and the confidence to handle important situations.
Arizona still needs that version of him.
What happens beyond this season may depend less on ability and more on whether Marte can provide the reliability expected from one of the team’s most important players.
