After being recalled in late March, Jose Fernandez is putting up some pretty good numbers for Arizona Diamondbacks.
Jose Fernandez made a statement in his MLB debut for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He's continued to show that he belongs in the big leagues.
Fernandez hit two home runs and drove in four runs when facing off against the Detroit Tigers in the last Diamondbacks' homestand. Any time a young player has a game like that probably raises his confidence to a new level.
His game against the Tigers helped Fernandez become just the seventh player in MLB history to have those types of numbers. Fernandez had three total hits in his early April showcase effort.
Entering Thursday afternoon's series finale against the New York Mets at Citi Field, Fernandez has a slash line of .300/.600/.900. He's gone 6-for-20 at the plate with those two homers and four RBIs to boot.
Fernandez also has managed to steal a base, showing Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo that he's a threat on the base paths, too.
He's played three games at first base, one at shortstop, and one at third base at this time.
Right now, Fernandez is in his sixth season in the Diamondbacks' organization. He came into this season as the youngest player on the team's 40-man roster. Fernandez ranked as the team's No. 27 prospect by MLB Pipeline, too.
A native of Venezuela, Fernandez has played the last three seasons with Caribes in the Venezuela Winter League. He's played in 60 games total for that team. In 2024, Fernandez played in 42 games, hitting .308 (53-for-172)/.858 OPS with 14 doubles, two triples, six homers, 30 RBIs, and 10 walks.
In the 2025 season, Fernandez played at Double-A Amarillo. He hit .272 (128-for-471)/.775 OPS with 27 doubles, four triples, 17 homers, 80 RBIs, and 32 walks in 122 games.
With Amarillo, Fernandez made 103 starts at shortstop, eight at third base, and eight at first. Those marked his most starts at shortstop since 2023, when he played at Single-A Visalia (51 games started).
In 2024, Fernandez, at High-A Hillsboro, hit .256 (93-for-363)/.636 OPS with seven doubles, two triples, seven homers, and 43 RBIs in 101 games. Fernandez played two games with Double-A Amarillo from June 26-29.
To show how adept he is at playing multiple positions, Fernandez made starts at every infield position except catcher: 68 at third base, 15 at shortstop, eight at first, one at third, and one at second.
That type of versatility makes Fernandez a valued member of the Diamondbacks' roster at this time. He'll be able to contribute while some players are on the Injured List at this time.
In 2023 at High-A Visalia, Fernandez hit .262 (93-for-355)/.697 OPS with 18 doubles, four triples, five homers, 44 RBIs, and 31 walks in 95 games.
If Fernandez can put up those numbers with Arizona, then don't be surprised if he stays up with the team as the season rolls along.
