Ildemaro Vargas' three-run homer supports Merrill Kelly as Arizona Diamondbacks beat Baltimore Orioles 4-3.

While Ildemaro Vargas provided the big blast for the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night, the bigger story might be Merrill Kelly.

Kelly, in making his first start this season, went 5 1/3 innings and allowed just two runs as the Diamondbacks defeated the Baltimore Orioles 4-3 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Kelly walked four and struck out three Orioles. For his first start of the season, though, that really is a solid outing. Four Diamondbacks relievers followed Kelly to the mound and kept the Orioles' offense in check.

Paul Sewald picked up his sixth save this season, cementing his role even more as the closer for Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo.

Kelly's start, though, received a big boost from Vargas.

After Baltimore went up 1-0 on Samuel Basallo's third home run this season, the Diamondbacks got their revenge against Orioles starter Trevor Rogers.

With one out in the top of the fifth, Vargas smoked a Rogers pitch over the left-center field wall for a three-run home run. It was Vargas' second homer this season and brought home James McCann and Jorge Barrosa ahead of him. That gave the Diamondbacks a 3-2 lead.

But Arizona wasn't through scoring in the fifth. Jose Fernandez continues to impress people as he lined a two-out double off the center-field wall to bring Geraldo Perdomo in for another run. That gave the Diamondbacks a 4-2 edge at that time.

In the bottom of the eight, Leody Taveras hit a two-out single that scored Pete Alonso and put the Orioles within 4-3. Baltimore's Colton Cowser then coaxed a walk to load the bases, bringing up Jeremiah Jackson.

Diamondbacks reliever Ryan Thompson coaxed Jackson into grounding back to him, and Thompson threw Jackson out to end the threat. Taylor Clarke and Juan Morillo also worked in relief of Kelly.

Sewald came on and secured the victory for Kelly and the Diamondbacks. He worked a perfect ninth, recording a strikeout along the way.

Arizona went 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position, while Baltimore went 1-for-6. Both teams had plenty of opportunities to add to their run total, yet it didn't materialize that much. Perdomo went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Diamondbacks, while McCann and Fernandez both went 2-for-4 on Tuesday night.

Jackson went 2-for-4 and Basallo went 2-for-3 in a losing effort for Baltimore.

With the win, the Diamondbacks go to 10-8 on the season and sit in third place in the National League West Division. The Orioles fall to 9-8 and they, too, sit in third place, but in the American League East Division.

It's been a productive road trip for the Diamondbacks as they've put together a 5-3 mark at this point. The Diamondbacks and Orioles will wrap up their series on Wednesday.
