Ketel Marte's 10th-inning double provided the difference as Arizona Diamondbacks edge Atlanta Braves 6-5.
What a way to celebrate for Ketel Marte and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Marte's 10th-inning double provided the difference as the Diamondbacks defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-5 at Chase Field in Downtown Phoenix.
Marte had himself quite a day at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI, and he even scored a run. Corbin Carroll joined the hit parade, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
With the game in extra innings, the Braves came up first with their designated runner at second base. Atlanta's Mauricio Dubón grounded out to Arizona shortstop Geraldo Perdomo with one out. The Braves didn't score in their half of the 10th inning, leaving the door wide open for Marte and the Diamondbacks to take the victory.
After the seven-game homestand, the Diamondbacks ended up splitting a four-game series with the Braves. They also swept the Detroit Tigers. Combined, Arizona finished up by going 5-2 in playing the Tigers and Braves.
Diamondbacks starting pitcher Brandon Pfaadt went 4 2/3 innings, giving up six hits, three runs (all earned), walking two, and striking out two. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo used six pitchers on Sunday. Eventually, reliever Taylor Rashi earned his first win this season as he pitched a clean 10th inning.
For the Braves, Martin Perez got the start on Easter Sunday. Perez went five innings, allowing five hits, four runs (all earned), walking one, and striking out one. He, too, was not involved in getting any decision. Braves reliever Joel Payamps gave up Marte's game-winning double and he earned the loss.
In the top of the first inning, Atlanta's Drake Baldwin smoked his fourth home run this season. Then, in the bottom of the first, Geraldo Perdomo hit a sacrifice fly to left. Marte scored and the Diamondbacks and Braves were all knotted up at 1-1.
Then, in the bottom of the fourth, Ildemaro Vargas tripled to right field. Carroll and Nolan Arenado scored on the hit, putting the Diamondbacks up 3-1. But Atlanta fought back. In the top of the fifth, with two on and one out, Baldwin singled to left and brought home Jorge Mateo.
Arenado's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth brought home Carroll and gave the Diamondbacks a 4-3 lead. Baldwin's RBI groundout in the top of the seventh tied things up yet again at 4-4.
The Diamondbacks went back in front in the bottom of the seventh inning on Carroll's triple that brought home Jorge Barrosa. That put Arizona back on top at 5-4. But, in the top of the ninth inning, Baldwin's single to center tied things up again at 5-5.
Well, the stage was set for Marte to come through in the clutch.
Now the Diamondbacks head east for a couple of road series. Starting on Tuesday, they'll play the New York Mets at Citi Field. Then, the Dbacks will make a little trip to Philadelphia for a three-game weekend series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
