Ketel Marte's three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning helped Arizona Diamondbacks sink San Francisco Giants.
Ketel Marte was the right man, at the right time, at the right place for the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night at Chase Field in Downtown Phoenix.
With runners at first and second base with two outs and the Diamondbacks down 3-2 to the San Francisco Giants, Marte grooved a Matt Gage pitch over the left-field wall and Arizona scored an improbable 5-3 victory.
Talk about getting off the deck and winning it late. The Diamondbacks took the game all the way down to the final out, when Marte connected on a 1-0 pitch and set the home crowd and his teammates into a frenzy.
Ryne Nelson was pretty solid for the D-backs on Tuesday night. He worked seven innings, giving up three earned runs, walking two, and striking out three. Nelson also gave up two home runs to the Giants.
Kevin Ginkel came on and worked a clean eighth inning, striking out three Giants hitters. Jonathan Loaisiga clocked in a solid ninth inning and picked up the win for the Diamondbacks.
Giants starter Landen Roupp worked six innings of seven-hit ball, giving up just one earned run, didn't walk a batter, and struck out three. Relievers Keaton Winn and Erik Miller were solid for San Francisco manager Tony Vitello. Then Caleb Kilian came in and, well, it didn't work out so well for the Giants.
But it sure did for the Diamondbacks.
Kilian took the loss, falling to 1-2 this season. He worked 1 1/3 innings, gave up two hits, three runs (two earned), didn't walk a batter, and struck out one.
Corbin Carroll tripled to center field in the bottom of the first, and scored on an error committed by the Giants' Luis Arraez. San Francisco's Rafael Devers and Willy Adames hit back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the second, giving the Giants a 2-1 lead. Daniel Susac's RBI double bumped up San Francisco's lead to 3-1.
Then, the worm turned in the bottom of the ninth in the Diamondbacks' favor. Gage looked around and couldn't believe what happened on Tuesday night.
With the victory, Arizona goes to 24-23, one game above .500, and sits in third place in the National League West Division. As for the Giants, they are now 20-29 overall and in fourth place in the NL West.
These two teams will wrap up this three-game series with a Wednesday afternoon matchup at Chase Field. Anyone working in Downtown Phoenix will get an opportunity to slip out of the office early, should they want to take in a game.
