Ketel Marte’s power surge, Merrill Kelly’s commanding start propelled Arizona Diamondbacks to a divisional sweep of San Francisco Giants.
The Arizona Diamondbacks completed a three-game sweep over the San Francisco Giants, a team they'll be seeing again next Monday, with a 6-3 victory on Wednesday at Chase Field in Phoenix.
Arizona dominated the first game 12-2, then rallied in game two for a 5-3 win.
Ketel Marte is red-hot, something this team knows can help bring them to the next level. Now, sitting at 25-23, the D-backs end their six-game homestand against a Colorado team they just saw three days ago.
Marte Reached in All Four Plate Appearances
After a clutch three-run homer in the ninth inning last night, Marte kept his hot streak alive. The 32-year old reached in all four plate appearances in the series finale but, most importantly, hit yet another home run.
Marte crushed his seventh homer of the year as he also added his seventh double. He had three hits and a walk in the contest. Oddly enough, his walk in the seventh was the team's only one in the contest.
An 0-for-5 night on May 15 motivated Marte like no other. Since then, he's gone on a four-game hitting streak, one that has seen him secure six RBIs on a pair of home runs and doubles. For what it's worth, he also has a pair of walks in that stretch.
Six Solid Innings From Merrill Kelly
Diamondbacks fans were patiently waiting for Merrill Kelly's next start to see how he could top his complete game in Colorado.
Ultimately, he threw six solid innings in an appearance that saw him allow the Giants only three runs. Obviously, those three didn't matter in the end as Arizona gave him more than enough run support and Kelly picked up his fourth win of the season.
This appearance marks four straight where Kelly had a decision. He's picked up a win in three straight, so three of his four on the year have come since May 9. After failing to make it through five innings up until that point, Kelly has now thrown six or more innings in each of his last three starts.
Kelly's final line in this game saw him strikeout four Giants without allowing a walk. In total, he gave up eight hits, which is tied for the second most he's given up in an outing this season.
The two-out, first inning home run definitely stung, but he worked past it and Arizona cruised to a series sweep. The D-backs answered in the first and later added a pair of runs in the third and three runs in the fifth inning.
