Ronny Mauricio comes through in clutch for New York Mets in 4-3, 10-inning win over Arizona Diamondbacks.
On a windy, chilly Tuesday afternoon at Citi Field in New York, the Arizona Diamondbacks were looking for their first road win in the 2026 MLB season. They hung tough with the New York Mets but, in the end, the game didn't go their way.
Ronny Mauricio, who was stuck on the Mets' bench for much of last season, put on a hero's cape and hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th inning. That was the difference as the Mets recorded a 4-3 win over the Diamondbacks.
The Tuesday afternoon game originally was scheduled for Tuesday night, but a colder-than-normal weather forecast led Mets officials to move that start time up.
For the Mets, it was their fourth straight victory. They are on a heater right now, and some Mets players probably were looking for heaters in the dugout on Tuesday, too. As for the Diamondbacks, it's been a tough go when trying to pick up a road victory.
Mets reliever Luke Weaver picked up the victory in relief of starter Freddy Peralta. Paul Sewald gave up Mauricio's game-winning hit and took the loss. Sewald came on in relief of Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen. Peralta worked 4 2/3 innings for New York, while Gallen worked five innings for Arizona.
Nolan Arenado had a pretty good day at the plate for the Diamondbacks, going 2-for-5. Still, Arenado's effort wasn't enough to help Arizona pick up that elusive first road victory in the 2026 MLB season.
On Wednesday, the Diamondbacks-Mets matchup will be another early afternoon contest to avoid colder temperatures that are forecast for the New York metropolitan area. Ryne Nelson, who is 0-1 on the season with a 5.79 ERA, gets the start for the Diamondbacks.
David Peterson, who is 0-1 with a 4.66 ERA, will take the mound for the Mets.
With Tuesday's loss, the Diamondbacks are now 4-6 overall, 0-4 on the road. New York goes to 6-4 overall, 3-1 in games played at Citi Field.
After the Diamondbacks finish up the three-game series against the Mets, they'll shift their focus to the City of Brotherly Love for a three-game weekend series at Citizens Bank Park against the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Arizona road trip wraps up with three games against the Baltimore Orioles.
Then, the Diamondbacks return to Chase Field in Downtown Phoenix on Friday, April 17, to start a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
By that time, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo probably hopes that his team has found a way to record its first road victory before coming home.
