Ketel Marte put on his Superman cape and hit a game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth as Arizona Diamondbacks walk-off Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2.
Ketel Marte knew the mission he was facing in the bottom of the ninth for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
With the game tied 2-2 and Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Tanner Scott on the mound, Marte clobbered a solo home run over the left-field fence. That was good enough for the Diamondbacks to secure a 3-2 walk-off win at Chase Field in Downtown Phoenix.
It was Marte's 11th home run this season and, well, might be one of the biggest home runs for Arizona this season. The Diamondbacks were going up against the National League West Division-leading Dodgers.
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo was celebrating, along with a dugout full of his players, as Marte reached home plate. It set off a rousing moment where everyone tried to get close to Marte and they all just enjoyed the moment.
Paul Sewald Gets the Victory
Arizona closer Paul Sewald picked up the victory, going to 2-4 this season. Scott took the loss for the Dodgers, working one-third of an inning in the bottom of the ninth inning. He's now 1-3.
Ryan Ward doubled to center fielder Ryan Waldschmidt in the top of the fifth inning, bringing home Santiago Espinal for a 1-0 Dodgers lead. Dalton Rushing singled to left field and Ward scored to up Los Angeles' lead to 2-0.
That was all the offense that the Dodgers would muster on Thursday night.
The Diamondbacks got on the board in the bottom of the eighth inning on Corbin Carroll's ninth home run this season. Carroll sent his blast over the right-field wall and Arizona got within a run at 2-1.
Later in the inning, Geraldo Perdomo singled to center field and Gabriel Moreno scored, tying the game at 2-2.
And then, well, Marte put on his Superman cape and took Scott deep for the walk-off win.
The Diamondbacks are now 33-29 and in second place in the National League West Division, while the Dodgers stay atop the division at 40-23.
Nelson, Wrobleski Were Excellent
But this game was a real pitching duel between Dodgers' starter Justin Wrobleski and Diamondbacks' starter Ryne Nelson. Wrobleski pitched six innings of shutout ball and just surrendered six hits. Nelson went seven innings, giving up five hits, two earned runs, walked two, and struck out three.
Brandyn Garcia worked a clean eighth inning, and Sewald came on to work his own magic in the ninth inning.
After Wrobleski left, Kyle Hurt and Will Klein followed him to the mound. Alex Vesia suffered his first blown save this season and, well, Scott came on and tried to keep the game tied and headed to some extra innings.
Yeah, well, that didn't work out.
The Diamondbacks will host the Washington Nationals in a three-game weekend series at Chase Field. But Arizona hits the road on Monday, which is a day off for the team. The Diamondbacks will go to South Florida, where they'll open up a three-game series on Tuesday night against the Miami Marlins.
