Ryne Nelson worked four ineffective innings as Miami Marlins shut down Arizona Diamondbacks 8-0.

Ryne Nelson was looking to be effective on Wednesday night for the Arizona Diamondbacks against the Miami Marlins. Unfortunately, Nelson did not get the job done.

The Marlins just shut down the Diamondbacks 8-0.

Nelson, who took the loss, went four innings, gave up eight hits, seven earned runs, and two home runs. He also walked one and struck out two. It was not the type of outing Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo wanted to see out of his starter.

Marlins' Offense Batters Nelson

But, that's how it went down. And, yes, the Marlins' offense was clicking on all cylinders. In the bottom of the third inning, Liam Hicks tripled and Otto Lopez singled to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Heriberto Hernandez singled and reached base. Owen Cassie, with two outs, hit a two-run homer and the Marlins extended their lead to 3-0. Javier Sanoja singled, then Lopez hit an RBI single to push the lead to 4-0.

Kyle Stowers strode to the plate and hit a Nelson pitch out of the park for a three-run home run. It was Stowers' fifth this season and the Marlins were swimming away with a 7-0 advantage.

Then, in the bottom of the fifth and Jonathan Loaisiga on the mound in place of Nelson, Cassie's sacrifice fly scored Hernandez and that wrapped up the scoring on Wednesday night as the Marlins held on for the 8-0 win.

RISP Numbers Hurt Diamondbacks

What hurt the Diamondbacks? They couldn't get runners home at all. Look at this: Arizona was 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left 10 total runners on base. That's not a good thing if you're trying to keep a game tight.

Miami was a bit better, going 3-for-8 with runners in scoring position and leaving six runners on base.

William Kempner, the third pitcher used by Miami on Wednesday night, earned his first win this season.

The Diamondbacks and Marlins wrap up their series on Thursday morning, Arizona time. First pitch for brunch will be at 10:10 a.m. MST.
