Arizona Diamondbacks led 7-1 at one point, but Baltimore Orioles stormed back for 9-7 win.
Ketel Marte and Nolan Arenado lit up the scoreboard for the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night, but the Baltimore Orioles got the last word.
Marte and Arenado hit two home runs apiece as the Diamondbacks roared to a 7-1 lead. That, though, didn't hold up as the Orioles stormed back from six runs down to get a 9-7 victory at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
Marte hit a leadoff homer in the top of the first inning off of Orioles starter Dean Kremer. Marte's shot landed on Eutaw Street, which runs behind the ballpark. It was a titanic shot.
It went a Statcast-projected 443 feet. Marte wasn't done, though, with big-time homers. His second blast went a projected 405 yards, just falling short of Eutaw Street.
Arenado got into the longball action in the fourth and sixth innings, according to MLB.com. Arenado's fourth-inning home run came off Kremer, while his sixth-inning blast came off Orioles reliever Albert Suarez.
By the top of the sixth inning, the Diamondbacks were up 7-1. It appeared that they could almost put things on cruise control.
Then, the Orioles' offense woke up. With one out, Baltimore's Jeremiah Jackson hit a grand slam home run. Dylan Beavers, Leody Taveras, and Colton Cowser scored ahead of Jackson. That put Baltimore within 7-6 as the Orioles scored five runs in the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Pete Alonso smashed a two-run homer that put Baltimore up 8-7. And, in the bottom of the eighth, Jackson hit his second home run of the night - a solo shot - to give the Orioles a 9-7 lead.
Ryne Nelson worked 5 1/3 innings for Arizona on Monday night, giving up three hits, two runs (one earned), walking two, and striking out seven. But the Diamondbacks' bullpen simply couldn't keep it together.
Taylor Rashi went 2/3 of an inning, giving up three hits, four runs (all earned), walked one, and struck out one. Jonathan Loaisiga, who got the loss, went 2/3 of an inning, giving up two runs (both earned), walked one, and didn't strike out anyone.
Suarez picked up the win for the Orioles. Baltimore reliever Ryan Helsley worked the ninth inning for his fifth save.
With the loss, the Diamondbacks fall to 9-8 overall and stand in third place in the National League West Division. Baltimore goes to 9-7 overall and the Orioles are now in first place in the American League East Division.
