Padres Ambush Taylor Clarke, Diamondbacks cover image

Four-run seventh inning proved to be the difference as San Diego Padres stop Arizona Diamondbacks 6-4.

After a four-run second inning, the Arizona Diamondbacks probably felt pretty good about getting a win on Saturday in the first game of the Mexico City Series in Mexico City, Mexico.

Yes, well, that all went out the door as the San Diego Padres had a four-run inning of their own in the seventh. That proved to be the difference as the Padres defeated the Diamondbacks 6-4.

Diamondbacks reliever Taylor Clarke worked the seventh inning and took the loss. His record goes to 1-1 this season. It also was Clarke's first blown save this season, too.

Let's break down how the game played out.

With two outs in the bottom of the second, Jose Fernandez doubled to center field. Ildemaro Vargas and Nolan Arenado scored, putting Arizona up 2-0. Alek Thomas smoked a two-run home run, his second homer this season, and the Diamondbacks were up early at 4-0.

But the Padres must have pulled out their rally bats from the bat rack because they were ready to chop into the Diamondbacks' lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Padres' Ty France hit his second home run this season. It was a solo blast to right-center field, putting San Diego within 4-1. Then, the Padres took out some frustration in the top of the seventh inning.

San Diego loaded the bases with none out. Gavin Sheets singled to right field, bringing home Jackson Merrill and Manny Machado to pull the Padres a little closer to the Diamondbacks. With the lead now down to one for Arizona, Ty France reached base on a fielder's choice and a fielding error by Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo.

With the bases loaded and nobody out, Freddy Fermin hit a sacrifice fly. Xander Bogaerts scored on the play, tying things up at 4-4. Jake Cronenworth was hit by a pitch, loading the bases up again.

Ramon Laureano hit a sacrifice fly to right field. Gavn Sheets scored on the play and gave the Padres a one-run lead at 5-4.

France wasn't done smashing long balls in the Mexico City air. In the top of the ninth, France took a pitch and sent it over the right-field wall. San Diego led 6-4 and that's how the game ended.

Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen pitched three innings, giving up one hit, no runs, and striking out three. Fernandez ended up going 2-for-4 in the game, collecting a double, two RBIs, and scoring a run.

Padres starter Germán Márquez worked six innings and got the win. His record goes to 3-1 overall. Mason Miller came on and maneuvered through a perfect ninth inning for his 10th save this season.

The Padres are 18-8 this season and sit in first place in the National League West Division. As for the Diamondbacks, they fall to 14-12 and in third place in the NL West.

Both teams wrap up the Mexico City Series, a two-game series, on Sunday in Mexico City.
