Reuniting with Corbin Burnes could revitalize Freddy Peralta’s season, offering the Arizona Diamondbacks a rock-solid postseason trio.
A reunion of former teammates could be in order if the Arizona Diamondbacks were to explore a trade for Freddy Peralta.
The New York Mets have no choice but to be sellers at the trade deadline. There are a million things to blame for Peralta's poor 2026 season, but it starts with the organization itself.
A change of scenery did not benefit the 30-year-old. Peralta has struggled, big time, since the Milwaukee Brewers traded him in the offseason.
Peralta would likely be a rental for the D-backs, but he could be a huge boost to a pitching staff that has widely underperformed this season, and could also once again be wearing the same uniform as Corbin Burnes.
Peralta to the Diamondbacks makes complete sense
ESPN's Jeff Passan recently named Peralta as the best fit for the Diamondbacks. He said starting pitching is the team's biggest need; it's just a matter of how far they're willing to go at the deadline.
At this point, the Mets can't expect much out of a return for Peralta. The Dominican Republic native has simply not been good, and his 4.99 ERA and 5-9 record could scare D-backs fans as that feels a bit too similar to what they're getting from the likes of Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen.
Peralta has elite stuff; it's just a matter of everything coming together. The Mets aren't in a position to be taking the Diamondbacks' top prospects, or even a big leaguer for Peralta, a guy who eyes a big contract after the 2026 season. With the deadline less than a week away, they're going to have to concede eventually, and it may be a trade Arizona is ready to make happen.
Passan loves a Peralta, Burnes, and Eduardo Rodriguez trio
Eduardo Rodriguez has exceeded every expectation thrown his way this season. The left-handed pitcher is 33 years old, but he sports an incredible 10-3 record and has the seventh-best ERA in all of baseball (2.48).
As a team, the Diamondbacks have baseball's ninth-best record, which is something that Passan thinks is hard to fathom.
Come the postseason, if they're able to get there, a Wild Card trio of Peralta, Burnes, and Rodriguez could do some damage. This team is also dealing with injuries to Ryne Nelson and Michael Soroka, so reinforcements could be on the way, but there's no reason not to make a splash at the deadline, especially with a guy like Peralta available for relatively cheap.
