Brandon Pfaadt’s performance fueled the Arizona Diamondbacks past their division rival.
The bottom three hitters in the Arizona Diamondbacks' lineup drove in all five runs as they took game one in a four-game slate against the San Diego Padres.
San Diego certainly made a big splash at the trade deadline, but none of that mattered in this series opener.
As for Arizona, all they added was Lars Nootbaar, someone who should debut in game two or three of the series.
Regardless, it was the Brandon Pfaadt show at Chase Field. The 27-year-old nearly went seven innings as he improved to 6-1 on the year.
Arizona is 7-0 in Pfaadt's last seven starts
The Diamondbacks haven't lost a game that Pfaadt has pitched in since Wednesday, June 3. Keep in mind, he pitched just one inning in that game, and it came against the back-to-back World Series Champions.
Against the Padres, Pfaadt threw 6.2 innings and gave up just five hits. His strikeout numbers remain extremely low, but that's not the end of the world as it helps him keep his pitch count in check.
Pfaadt threw 90 pitches in this one, and it's worth noting the lone run Arizona gave up doesn't even go against him as it was unearned.
Sure, Pfaadt has walked four batters in his last three starts, but he's gone at least six innings in all three, so that eight strikeout to four walk ratio remains rock solid.
After his aforementioned June 3 appearance, Pfaadt's ERA was 5.92. In exactly a two-month span, his ERA has fallen to an incredible 3.66.
Unlikely heroes vs. Padres
Geraldo Perdomo stayed hot near the top of the order with a pair of hits, but it was the trio of Tim Tawa, James McCann, and Jorge Barrosa who drove in all five runs.
Tawa had a masterful performance in this one as he went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a pair of runs. He hit his fifth homer of the year in the fourth inning off Michael King, which is an incredible accomplishment, to say the least.
McCann, who's hitting .319 this year, also drove in a run. The California native went 2-for-4, securing his 19th RBI of the year on a night where he hit his fifth double of the season.
Finally, Barrosa ended up replacing an 0-for-3 Ryan Waldschmidt in the lineup. That decision paid off in a big way as Barrosa drove in a run, and somehow the bottom of the order was way more important than guys like Corbin Carroll, Max Kepler, and Ketel Marte, who were all hitless.
