After taking lead in top of ninth, Arizona Diamondbacks suffer tough one-run loss to Texas Rangers.

The Arizona Diamondbacks positioned themselves for a big road win over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

But that didn't happen as the Rangers put up three runs in the bottom of the ninth to secure a 6-5 win over the Diamondbacks.

It was a tough way to lose as the Diamondbacks took a 5-3 lead in the top of the ninth. As it ended up, both the Diamondbacks and Rangers traded three-run ninth innings each. It's especially tough since Ryne Nelson threw a really solid game for Arizona.

Nelson worked seven innings, giving up three earned runs, four hits, didn't walk a batter, and struck out eight. In the end, though, it was the Diamondbacks' bullpen that melted down. Pretty reliable Paul Sewald came on in the ninth, looking for another save. All he got, though, was a blown save and the loss, dropping him to 0-4 overall.

In that Arizona half of the ninth inning, down 3-2, Corbin Carroll led off with a double. Geraldo Perdomo walked with Carroll moving over to third base. Nolan Arenado followed with a double, scoring Carroll and pushing Perdomo over to third base himself.

Ildemaro Vargas, who continues to rake at the plate this season, singled and brought in Perdomo for a 5-3 Diamondbacks lead.

It looked like the victory was in the bag for Arizona with Sewald coming on to shut it down.

Until he didn't. What made it worse is the damage was done with two outs in the home half of the ninth. With Josh Jung on first base and with a 3-2 count, the Rangers' Ezequiel Duran doubled to left field. Jung scored and it was 5-4 D-backs. Alejandro Osuna walked, putting runners at first and second.

Jake Burger, who earlier had a homer in the ballgame, singled to score Duran and tied the game at 5-5. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo then pulled Sewald from the game and brought in reliever Juan Morillo.

With runners at first and second, Texas' Danny Jansen put on his Superman cape and singled to left. Osuna scored, and the celebration was on for Rangers players as they mobbed Jansen on the field.

Want an infuriating statistic for the Diamondbacks in this game? They were 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position and left 13 runners on base. Lovullo might need some Tylenol to get over seeing that big number stick out.

Arenado, Ketel Marte, and Gabriel Moreno all had two hits apiece on Wednesday night.

Games like Wednesday night's defeat deep in the heart of Texas are ones that teams looking to get position in a divisional race look back at later.

Cal Quantrill, the seventh pitcher used by Rangers manager Skip Schumaker, picked up the win in relief.

The Diamondbacks are now 20-22 on the season, sitting in third place in the National League West Division. As for the Rangers, they go to 20-21 and are in second place in the American League West Division.

Arizona gets a day off on Thursday before opening a three-game series at hitter-friendly Coors Field in Denver, Colo., on Friday against the Colorado Rockies.

They'll have some time to think about what happened against the Rangers on Wednesday night. It might cause a few Diamondbacks to have nightmares.
