Michael Soroka worked seven efficient innings as Arizona Diamondbacks stop Washington Nationals.
It was a great day to be at Chase Field in Downtown Phoenix as Arizona Diamondbacks' fans were treated to a great outing by starting pitcher Michael Soroka.
Soroka is now 8-3 this season as the Diamondbacks defeated the Washington Nationals 5-1 in a Sunday afternoon ballgame. He went seven innings, gave up three hits, one earned run, walked two, struck out six, and gave up the Nationals' lone run on a home run.
Nationals starter Cade Cavalli wasn't as lucky. Cavalli took the loss and falls to 3-4 this season. He allowed seven hits, four earned runs, walked one, struck out two, and gave up two home runs.
Corbin Carroll Goes Deep
With one out in the bottom of the first inning, Corbin Carroll slammed his 10th home run over the center-field wall. That gave the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead.
The Nationals' C.J. Abrams hit his 14th home run this season, tying things up at 1-1.
From this point forward, the Diamondbacks put the hammer down and scored more runs.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Arizona challenged an out call at first base, and it was overturned. Ryan Waldschmidt grounded into a force out. Nolan Arenado scored and Smith and Waldschmidt were out and the Diamondbacks were up 2-1.
Tommy Troy walked to leadoff the Arizona fifth inning. With two outs, Gabriel Moreno hit his fourth homer this season. Troy scored ahead of him and the Diamondbacks now led 4-1 at this point.
Corbin Carroll walked with one out in the seventh inning. Moreno singled to right and ended up on second base. Carroll moved to third on the hit. Arenado walked, and then Smith hit a sacrifice fly to center field. Carroll scored and that wrapped up the Diamondbacks' scoring at 5-1.

With the victory, the Diamondbacks are now 34-31 and in third place in the National League West Division. The Nationals fall to .500 at 33-33 and are in third place in the National League East Division.
The Diamondbacks are getting a day off on Monday before opening a three-game series in South Florida against the Miami Marlins.
Arizona is in a good position to gain some ground on their overall record. They'll get a chance to start out on that path against the Marlins.
