Michael Soroka's stellar seven innings help him go 4-0 this season as Arizona Diamondbacks beat Toronto Blue Jays 6-3.
The MLB world might want to turn its attention toward Michael Soroka because he's on a big-time heater right now.
Soroka worked seven innings on Friday night at Chase Field, giving up five hits and just two runs as the Arizona Diamondbacks opened a three-game weekend series against the Toronto Blue Jays with a 6-3 victory.
How's Soroka doing? He's 4-0 on the season and just maybe, just maybe, is putting himself in early conversations for a National League Cy Young Award. Sure, it's still early in the 2026 MLB season but Soroka is giving Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo plenty to smile about right now.
Arizona reliever Jonathan Loáisiga earned his fourth hold of the season and closer Paul Sewald came on in the ninth. Sewald worked a clean ninth inning, getting one strikeout, as he picked up his seventh save.
By the way, the Diamondbacks are now 12-8 and in third place in the National League West Division.
That's a pretty solid start to the 2026 MLB season, indeed.
Let's break down how the D-backs got past the Blue Jays, who fell to 7-12 with the loss. Toronto, who reached the World Series last season, now sits in fifth place in the American League East Division.
The Blue Jays jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Lenyn Sosa's sacrifice bunt that scored Myles Straw. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Nolan Arenado smoked his fourth home run this season, a solo shot, and that tied things up at 1-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Corbin Carroll's RBI single scored Jorge Barrosa and gave Arizona a 2-1 advantage. But the D-backs weren't done scoring. Jose Fernandez, who keeps turning heads with his outstanding play, singled to center and Ketel Marte scored. That put the Diamondbacks up 2-1.
Then, in the top of the sixth, Straw hit his first home run this season to tie things up at 2-2.
The Diamondbacks answered in the bottom of the seventh after the fans took their seventh-inning stretch at Chase Field. Arenado's RBI single to center scored Carroll as the D-backs went up 5-2 over the Blue Jays.
In the bottom of the eighth as Toronto edged closer at 5-3, Tim Tawa's second double this season brought home James McCann. That gave Arizona its 6-3 edge and that was it for the scoring.
Reliever Braydon Fisher started for Blue Jays manager John Schneider on Friday night, but he only pitched an inning. Eric Lauer came on in the second inning and worked five innings for Toronto. He gave up five hits and three runs (all earned) while walking one and striking out four.
Lauer absorbed the loss for the Blue Jays, falling to 1-3 on the season.
Marte and Arenado both had two hits for the Diamondbacks to pace a 10-hit attack against the Blue Jays pitchers.
The Diamondbacks and Blue Jays get back at it at Chase Field on Saturday afternoon. They will wrap up the three-game weekend series with a Sunday afternoon matchup.
After an off day on Monday, Arizona will host the Chicago White Sox for a three-game series.
If the Diamondbacks can keep playing at this pace, then they might, just might, be in a position to reach the MLB postseason.
But that's a long way off at this point.
Lovullo and the Diamondbacks can enjoy their solid start after a big Friday night victory in the Valley of the Sun.
