Michael Soroka only lasted three innings as Milwaukee Brewers pounded Arizona Diamondbacks 13-1.
Ildemaro Vargas collected two more hits on Thursday as the Arizona Diamondbacks were looking to leave Milwaukee with a getaway day victory.
Unfortunately, the Diamondbacks might have wanted to get away before the final pitch was thrown as the Milwaukee Brewers battered Arizona starting pitcher Michael Soroka as they won 13-1 at American Family Field on Thursday afternoon.
Vargas now has hit in 23 straight games this season, 26 games dating back to last season. If Diamondbacks fans were looking for a highlight from this game against Milwaukee, then there you go. Vargas will look to extend that streak this weekend. More on the D-backs' upcoming weekend series later.
Soroka came in with a 4-0 record on the season. He looked more like a pitcher with an 0-4 record, though, against the Brewers.
Brewers starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff only pitched 1 1/3 innings and was pulled in the second inning by Brewers manager Pat Murphy. ESPN MLB Insider Jeff Passan posted about Woodruff's exit on X.
"Brandon Woodruff exited his start for Milwaukee in the second inning," Passan wrote on Thursday afternoon. "His fastball didn't even reach 87 mph after sitting at 92.5 all year. Tough luck for the Brewers, though they do plenty of starting-pitching depth, with Logan Henderson carving at Triple-A and big league-ready."
What about Soroka? In his three innings of work for Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo, Soroka gave up 10 hits, eight runs (all earned), walked two, struck out one, and gave up a home run. That stat line will be giving him nightmares for some time.
Arizona scored its lone run in the fourth inning after Milwaukee had staked itself to a 6-0 advantage. Vargas and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. both went 2-for-4, and Corbin Carroll contributed a 3-for-4 day from the plate as well.
The Brewers put up three runs in the first, third, and sixth innings. William Contreras and Sal Frelick hit home runs for the home team en route to the big victory. Milwaukee went 4-for-16 with runners in scoring position and left four runners on base.
The Diamondbacks were 2-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left six runners on base.
Brewers reliever Shane Drohan, the third pitcher used by Murphy, picked up the victory and is now 1-1 this season. Soroka fell to 4-1 after the big defeat.
Arizona and Milwaukee are now both 16-14 this season. The Diamondbacks are in third place in the National League West Division, while the Brewers sit in fourth place in the National League Central Division.
After Thursday's game, the Diamondbacks made a beeline to get out of town and head toward Chicago. The D-backs and Chicago Cubs are going to play a three-game series at Wrigley Field in the Windy City this weekend. All three games will have an 11:20 a.m. MT (1:20 p.m. ET) first pitch time.
