The Detroit Tigers eye Arizona Diamondbacks' Michael Soroka as a potential rotation anchor.
The Arizona Diamondbacks don't exactly know what the future holds for Michael Soroka, but there's at least a chance he returns in 2027.
The two sides agreed on a $7.5 million deal in 2026, and for the most part, the 28-year-old had a good year with the club.
Soroka finished with a 9-5 record and 3.41 ERA, but now it's decision time as there's a $10 million mutual option on the table for next season.
Motor City Bengals' Stephen Riesen firmly believes Soroka will become a free agent, and he's dead-set on the Detroit Tigers going out and getting him.
Seeing as Soroka has pitched for five teams in the last four seasons, it would only be fitting that he joins a sixth heading into his eighth year in the big leagues.
Tigers eye Soroka if he leaves the Diamondbacks
There's no telling at this point in time as to whether or not the Canadian native is going to hit free agency, but if he does, Riesen thinks he's the ideal starting pitcher for the Tigers to bring in.
Remember, this is a Tigers team that just dealt Tarik Skubal at the trade deadline, and now has to worry about potentially re-signing Casey Mize or letting him walk.
These are the decisions that set the good teams apart from the great ones, and that goes for the Diamondbacks as well.
If the two sides are able to come to terms on the mutual option, Soroka will be a mainstay in Arizona's starting rotation next season.
The Diamondbacks don't necessarily have any other rock-solid pitching options to go to at the given moment, so it would make complete sense for them to want to bring Soroka back, but that's the problem with a mutual option.
If Soroka sees he has interest from other teams, he's obviously going to decline it and work out a much larger deal elsewhere.
Riesen says Soroka feels like a "natural fit" for the Tigers in '27, adding "he matches the rest of the rotation very well by also pounding the zone, but gets just enough chase to be a swing-and-miss weapon toward the top of the rotation."
Diamondbacks should try to keep Soroka
Worst-case scenario, the D-backs bring Soroka back and have to trade him at the deadline. Teams would know he's a rental, but then they can worry about figuring out that contract in the offseason.
Fresh off a year where he started the second most games in his career, Soroka feels like a great option for Arizona to keep around in their 2027 rotation, so it'll be extremely interesting to see how everything plays out with this one.
