Arizona Diamondbacks top prospect Ryan Waldschmidt singles in first MLB at-bat, but New York Mets pull off late comeback.

Entering Friday night's series opener with the New York Mets, the Arizona Diamondbacks called up top prospect outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt. Waldschmidt got into the game as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning and singled.

That brought cheers from not only Diamondbacks fans and players, but Waldschmidt's family in attendance, too. Yet the Mets played spoiler, scoring two runs in the top of the 10th inning to take a 3-1 win at Chase Field.

Waldschmidt's two-out single to Mets left fielder Juan Soto will be something he'll never forget. He joined the big-league club after it designated starting center fielder Alek Thomas for assignment earlier on Friday.

The Diamondbacks, though, would like to forget how Friday night's game ended.

Mark Vientos' fifth homer this season off Diamondbacks starting pitcher Ryne Nelson gave New York a 1-0 lead. But Arizona answered in the home half of the second as Nolan Arenado smoked his sixth homer this season over the left-field wall.

Arenado's homer came off of Mets starter Nolan McLean.

Both Nelson and McLean were really strong for their teams. Nelson went 6 2/3 innings, allowing just one earned run, two hits, walked one, and struck out seven. He didn't figure in the decision, though, as Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo looked toward his bullpen to keep things close.

McLean worked six innings for the Mets, also giving up just one earned run, three hits, walked one, and struck out six. Neither Lovullo nor Mets manager Carlos Mendoza couldn't have asked more out of their starters.

The game stayed tight until extra innings.

With designated runner Brett Baty on second base, Vientos doubled to left and Baty scored. The Mets went up 2-1 at that point, but they'd add another run in the inning. Pinch-runner Vidal Bujan took over for Vientos at second base. Carson Benge followed with a ground-rule double, scoring Bujan for a 3-1 Mets lead.

Kevin Ginkel, the fourth pitcher used by Lovullo, gave up the go-ahead runs and took the loss. He's now 1-2 for the season. In one-third of an inning, Ginkel gave up three hits two runs (one earned), didn't walk anyone, and struck out one.

Troubled Mets reliever Devin Williams, who hasn't been that good for the team this season, worked an inning in relief. He got the win, pushing his record to 2-1. Tobias Myers worked a clean 10th for his first save this season.

The Diamondbacks are now three games under .500 at 17-20. As for the Mets, whose offense has looked putrid at times this season, they go to 15-23.

This three-game series continues on Saturday afternoon before wrapping up with a Sunday afternoon matchup at Chase Field.
