Shota Imanega goes seven innings of four-hit ball as Chicago Cubs blank Arizona Diamondbacks 2-0.
The Ildemaro Vargas Hit Watch came to an end on Saturday. Also, the Arizona Diamondbacks' offense was not too present.
Shota Imanega threw seven innings of four-hit ball at Wrigley Field, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 2-0 win.
Vargas, one day after going 4-for-5, was held without a hit as his 27-game hitting streak over the past two seasons is now history. Vargas started this season off with hitting in 24 consecutive games. Now? That's all in the past.
Imanega and Cubs reliever Brent Brown kept Vargas hitless as he went 0-for-4. Imanega walked one and struck out five in his seven innings of work. Brown picked up his first save this season with two innings of hitless relief.
According to MLB.com, Vargas' 24-game streak was the second-longest streak to open a season since 1940. Detroit Tigers legend Ron LeFlore is the leader, thanks to his 30-game streak to open the 1976 season.
Arizona starter Ryne Nelson took the loss, falling to 1-3 this season. Nelson pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up four hits, one run (earned), walked two, and struck out four. Nelson also gave up a home run in his outing.
Four Diamondbacks relievers followed Nelson to the mound at Wrigley Field. Juan Morillo worked an inning, giving up a hit, a run (earned), didn't walk anyone, and struck out two Cubs.
If Diamondbacks fans were looking for some offense at the "friendly confines" in Chicago, well, that didn't happen.
Geraldo Perdomo, Corbin Carroll, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., and Nolan Arenado all had hits for the Diamondbacks on Saturday. Arizona was 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position and left five runners on base.
Ian Happ hit a solo home run for the Cubs, his eighth homer this season, to put Chicago up 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Chicago added another run in the bottom of the eighth, and that wrapped up the scoring.
The Diamondbacks fall to .500 at 16-16 after Saturday's defeat, now in third place in the National League West Division. As for the Cubs, they go to 21-12 overall and sit in first place in the National League Central Division.
Saturday's game wrapped up in under 2 1/2 hours as both teams just could not dial up much offense at the plate. But the Cubs were able to scratch out those two runs and that was the difference. Arizona will try and get itself on the scoreboard with a few runs in the series finale.
The Diamondbacks and Cubs wrap up their three-game weekend series on Sunday.
After Sunday's game, the D-backs head back to the Greater Phoenix area. The team gets Monday off before opening a homestand on Tuesday with the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets coming into the Valley of the Sun.
