The 2026 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline is less than a week away, and each of the 30 clubs faces a unique situation with how they will bolster their rosters, whether it be for the present or the future.

Teams that are in the playoff hunt might be willing to move off prospects to get talent that can contribute to the 40-man roster immediately. Other organizations that are having a rough year might find it beneficial to shed some contracts to get prospects on controllable contracts.

Then there are those clubs that fall somewhere in the middle. The ones who are decent, but not great, and could fall out of the conversation for playing in October with one bad losing streak.

One of those teams is the Arizona Diamondbacks, and their situation could influence the moves they decide to make before Aug. 3 at 6 p.m. ET.

Recently, Tim Britton of The Athletic grouped the 30 MLB teams into different tiers that dictate what the Trade Deadline might look like based on their situations. 

There are seven tiers in total, and the following are the titles: "World Series or bust" (Tier 1), "Contending sustainably" (Tier 2), "Can we make noise in October?" (Tier 3), "Is this really worth it?" (Tier 4), "We know we’re a year early" (Tier 5), "Let’s get to the offseason" (Tier 6) and "How much do we have to change?" (Tier 7).

The Los Angeles Dodgers occupy the first tier by themselves. However, the Diamondbacks fall into tier 4, which puts them in between a rock and a hard place. 

The silver lining is that Arizona is hardly alone as Tier 4 has the most teams occupying the space.

Heading into Tuesday’s slate of games, Arizona was on a three-game losing streak. Considering the team has just been keeping its head above water for most of the season, such a skid can prove to be dangerous.

Luckily for the Diamondbacks, a 55-52 record is good enough for second place in the National League West Division. They will not be catching the Dodgers, but they can stick around in the Wild Card picture.

Yet it is important to note that Arizona is in a critical series with the Pittsburgh Pirates, as both teams battle for position in the Wild Card standings. A series-opening loss to Pittsburgh on Monday pushed the Diamondbacks to fourth place in those standings, and if they lose the series, it can be even more harmful.

You get the point. Arizona is in somewhat of a precarious situation. General manager Mike Hazen has made it clear that the front office might look to become buyers, but he also emphasized how getting players back from the Injured List can transform how the season looks.

It won’t be an easy choice for the Diamondbacks, but it is a choice they have to make.
