Reliever Kevin Ginkel’s heartfelt social media farewell signals the end of an era with the Arizona Diamondbacks as the bullpen stalwart prepares to enter free agency this winter.

The Arizona Diamondbacks will face several roster decisions this offseason, although some appear considerably easier to predict than others.

Arizona has many active players under contract for the 2027 season, and manager Torey Lovullo will return. However, the Diamondbacks also have several players with expiring agreements who could be retained through new deals.

Kevin Ginkel, though, appears almost certain to depart.

Why Ginkel could leave Diamondbacks

Ginkel has been one of the more dependable members of Arizona’s bullpen for several seasons, but his latest social media message made his departure appear inevitable.

In an Instagram post on Sept. 30, Ginkel thanked Arizona and explained that every inning, bullpen night and moment in a Diamondbacks uniform meant a great deal to him.

He expressed appreciation for the opportunity to represent the organization and the city. Ginkel also described his teammates as brothers while reflecting on their laughter, work, victories and difficult moments, none of which he would trade.

The right-hander thanked the coaches, trainers, front office, clubhouse staff and everyone working behind the scenes for supporting him and pushing him each day.

Ginkel also recognized the fans for attending games and creating a loud environment at Chase Field. He explained that their energy carried the team and that he felt their support whenever he took the mound, leaving him permanently grateful.

“Thank you, Arizona,” Ginkel wrote in his Instagram post.

“Every inning, every bullpen night, every moment in this uniform meant the world to me. I’m grateful for the opportunity to play for this organization and this city.

“To my teammates, you’ve been my brothers," Ginkel continued. "The laughs, the grind, the wins and the tough ones, I wouldn’t trade any of it. To the coaches, trainers, front office, clubhouse staff, and everyone behind the scenes, thank you for pushing me and having my back every day.

“And to the fans, you showed up and made Chase Field loud. Your energy carried us, and I felt it every time I took the mound. Forever grateful.”

Ginkel is not under contract for 2027. It would be somewhat surprising if the Diamondbacks retained the reliever on anything beyond a low-cost, one-year agreement.

His statement also suggested that negotiations are not trending toward a return.

Ginkel finished last season with a 4.12 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 67.2 innings over 74 appearances. However, his 3.55 xERA and 3.50 FIP indicated that he pitched better than his ERA suggested.

He also recorded three saves and 11 holds.

Ginkel struggled as the season progressed, posting a 9.28 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 10.2 innings across 13 appearances during August.

He was an important member of Arizona’s bullpen during its 2023 World Series appearance against the Texas Rangers and deserves to be remembered for his positive contributions. Nevertheless, he will likely continue his career elsewhere.

Ginkel’s value

Ginkel brought durability, resilience and a willingness to accept different bullpen responsibilities. He could enter during demanding situations without requiring a fixed role to remain prepared.

His message also reflected an appreciation for every part of the organization, not merely the teammates visible during games. Recognizing coaches, trainers, staff members and fans demonstrated awareness of everyone involved in supporting a player’s career.

Ginkel also experienced successful stretches and difficult periods without avoiding accountability. Relief pitching requires the ability to recover quickly because another important opportunity can arrive the following day.

His late-season struggles may influence Arizona’s decision, but they should not erase his years of work. Ginkel leaves behind meaningful postseason memories and a clear respect for the Diamondbacks organization.
