What a wild night at Dodger Stadium.

In one of the most improbable plays in MLB history (yes, let's call it what it is), the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 in 11 innings. The Dodgers are back in the National League Championship Series for a second straight year with their goal remaining that big one: Repeating as World Series champions

By now, the world knows about Phillies reliever Orion Kerkering. (Editors note: I'll have an opinion piece on Kerkering going up on Dodgers Roundtable).

Kerkering came on in relief and was pitching in the 11th inning. The Dodgers loaded the bases with two outs in the 11th. Dodgers batter Andy Pages swung at a Kerkering pitch and broke his bat. The ball rolled out toward Kerkering. At the same time, Dodgers pinch-runner Hyeseong Kim broke from third base.

That's a standard play in that situation. Kerkering seemed to not be able to grab the ball immediately.

Once he did and saw Kim bust it toward home plate, Kerkering threw a ball high and wide of Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto. Kim crossed home plate on the throwing error, then went back to make sure he touched it.

The Dodger Stadium crowd roared. The Dodgers dugout exploded in joy.

Kerkering was left bent over with his hands on his knees.

Dodgers players ran past him as Kerkering just stayed there.

Improbable, you say? The Dodgers really dodged a big one on Thursday night.

Up until the 11th inning, the game had been dominated by pitching. Dodgers starter Tyler Glasnow was lights-out. So was Phillies starter Cristopher Sánchez.

Then, Dodgers closer Roki Sasaki (and that's his role now) came on and was incredible.

The Dodgers and Phillies could only muster up one run apiece. It was an insane game filled with dominant pitching, hitting that couldn't get going on either side...and the 11th inning.

"It was a war. It was a battle," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after the game, according to MLB.com. "Instant-classic game."

Do you want to know how rare it is for an MLB postseason series to end on an error? It happened only once before, nine years earlier on the same date - October 9 - in 2016 between the Toronto Blue Jays and Texas Rangers.

This game will get picked apart by MLB fans and scribes for years to come.

On Thursday night, though, the kings of the baseball world keep their crowns tight for another series. The Dodgers will play either the Milwaukee Brewers or Chicago Cubs in the NLCS. That series moves back to Milwaukee for a Game 5 on Saturday after the Cubs shut down the Brewers 6-0 on Thursday night.

While they battle it out, the Dodgers can have a breather.

And thank their lucky stars that an errant throw helped take them to the next step toward repeating as champs.

Below the dash, there's a recap of the scoring throughout the game as well as any news that broke before or during the game itself.

Dodgers Roundtable will have more coverage between now and through the NLCS.

    BREAKING NEWS

Tanner Scott has been replaced on the Dodgers National League Championship Series roster by Justin Wrobleski, according to reports. Scott underwent an unexpected procedure to address a lower-body abscess matter. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts reportedly has not ruled Scott out of the World Series should the team reach that point.

Hi there, Joe Rutland for Dodgers Roundtable on Roundtable Sports.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have another chance to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 4 of the National League Division Series at Dodger Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:08 p.m. Eastern and will be shown on TBS.

Tyler Glasnow gets the start for the Dodgers against Cristopher Sánchez for the Phillies.

Glasnow missed out on the Dodgers' 2024 World Series title run with a season-ending injury. This will be Glasnow's first postseason start for the Dodgers and he's probably been chomping at the bit to get out there.

In the 2025 MLB postseason so far, Glasnow worked in relief for 1 2/3 scoreless innings in Game 1 of the NLDS.

"Even though he pitched earlier in the series, Glasnow is expected to be full-go in Game 4," according to MLB.com. "Glasnow missed a chunk of the regular season due to inflammation in his right shoulder, but he rose to the occasion while healthy. After returning from the IL, Glasnow posted a 2.86 ERA in 13 starts."

What about Sánchez? He started in Game 1 of the NDLS for the Phillies. He allowed two runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings of work. Sánchez struck out eight Dodgers batters. He put together a solid regular season, finishing second in innings pitched (202), third in ERA (2.50), fourth in WHIP (1.06) and fifth in strikeouts (212) among pitchers in the National League.

The Dodgers hope Shohei Ohtani can get going out of the leadoff spot. He's not been Shohei-like in this series, so any boost in offense will be a big plus for Dodgers manager Dave Roberts' squad. Look for Trae Turner to hold down the leadoff role for the Phillies and manager Rob Thomson.

Check back in at Dodgers Roundtable for all the key scoring plays between the Dodgers and Phillies on Thursday.

    BOTTOM 1st INNING
