As much as the Los Angeles Dodgers have had bullpen issues this season, watching Tanner Scott attempt to get a save can be like a tightrope walk for Dodgers fans.

On Friday night, though, Scott managed to get that important save as Los Angeles edged past the Seattle Mariners 3-2 in the opening game of these playoff-bound teams' final MLB regular season series.

With the victory, the Dodgers take another step toward getting prepped for the National League Wild Card series. Who they will play remains up in the air, but Dodgers manager Dave Roberts had to have felt really good watching Scott pitch so well.

Roki Sasaki, making yet another appearance out of the Dodgers bullpen on Friday night, had a tough assignment - shut down Mariners slugger Cal Raleigh. It was a tight spot with Randy Arozarena at second base and Raleigh, who should be in line for the American League MVP honors (despite the numbers put up by New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge), was at the plate.

Sasaki won the battle, helping to secure a Dodgers two-run lead at that time. The Mariners did get another run, but Scott put the hammer down for his 23rd save this season. Justin Wrobleski got the win in relief of Dodgers starter Emmet Sheehan and Kike Hernández hit a home run in the LA victory.

"That's the guy that we've seen in the past and were really excited about," Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes told Dodger reporter Sonja Chen of MLB.com before Friday night's game.

"He came out of it feeling great. I think it'll be important for him to get out there and continue to understand the warmup routine and just pitching in different situations as a reliever. So I think it's mutually beneficial to get him back out there."

Arozarena was 2-for-4 for the Mariners with a double, a run scored and a stolen base. Mariners starter George Kirby was pretty good in his outing, going five innings and allowing just three hits and two earned runs. Kirby struck out 10 Dodgers hitters on the night, so he's ready for playoff action already.

The Dodgers and Mariners will play again on Saturday night, then turn it around pretty quickly for a Sunday afternoon matchup. On Sunday, all MLB games will start at the same time, 3:05 p.m. Eastern time. That will mark the end of the 2025 MLB regular season for all teams, except for those like the Dodgers who have punched their ticket to postseason play.
