Facing a do-or-die 3-0 deficit, manager Dave Roberts shuffles the deck, elevating a struggling Shohei Ohtani to leadoff and betting on Will Smith to ignite a desperate Los Angeles Dodgers offense.
With the season on the line, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is going for broke.
Shohei Ohtani has moved up to the leadoff spot, and while that may have been ordinary a few months ago, this is an entirely different situation.
Ohtani continues to look lost at the plate and the Dodgers need their leadoff hitter to reach base, and that's something he simply hasn't done consistently this postseason.
With Game 4 of the National League Championship Series just a few hours away, the Dodgers have released their entire lineup, and it includes far more notable moves than just Ohtani skyrocketing from sixth to first.
Dodgers Game 4 NLCS lineup
1. Shohei Ohtani, DH
2. Mookie Betts, SS
3. Freddie Freeman, 1B
4. Will Smith, C
5. Kyle Tucker, RF
6. Teoscar Hernandez, LF
7. Miguel Rojas, 2B
8. Andy Pages, CF
9. Kike Hernandez, 3B
When looking at this Dodgers lineup, there's only one player who has a batting average higher than .250 in the postseason.
Ohtani only has two hits in the series, and while he's drawn a pair of walks, it'll be interesting to see how he fares left-on-left against the Milwaukee Brewers' Shane Drohan.
Drohan is expected to be an opener, and while Game 4 could be a semi-traditional bullpen game for manager Pat Murphy's squad, it wouldn't be surprising to see them keep Drohan in there for two or three innings.
While yes, Ohtani is used to batting leadoff, is there a world where you can justify putting him in that position with the stakes of this game?
It's win or go home for the Dodgers as they face an unprecedented 3-0 deficit in the NLCS.
Smith's big hit moved him back up
Kyle Tucker took over at the cleanup spot in Game 3. He went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run, but that wasn't enough to keep him there for Game 4.
Will Smith, who ended his massive slump with an RBI double on Wednesday, Oct. 14, is now hitting fourth once again.
These are big risks for Roberts to take, especially since Smith only had the one big hit and it's not like it even mattered in the long run.
No one will bat an eye at his choices in the bottom of the lineup, though it'll be interesting to see how long Drohan lasts and how that impacts Roberts' decision-making once the Dodgers get to this Brewers bullpen.
