When the Los Angeles Dodgers start their march toward a third straight World Series championship, they want to make sure everything is aligned.
Of course, the Dodgers bolstered their outfield situation by signing free agent Kyle Tucker in this offseason. And, yes, Los Angeles addressed its bullpen needs with free agent Edwin Díaz.
But, could the Dodgers add another infielder, especially at the MLB Trade Deadline later this season?
A potential move tying Los Angeles with shortstop CJ Abrams of the Washington Nationals is being tossed out, according to a predictive piece from Bleacher Report's Tim Kelly.
Kelly points out that Nationals president of baseball operations Paul Toboni is looking to fix up the team, even if it means tearing it down. One trade pawn that Toboni might even consider ditching is Abrams.
"Shortstop CJ Abrams will naturally be a piece many teams have interest in, because he's flashed star potential, but hasn't reached his ceiling consistently," Kelly wrote.
"Still, he posts consistently -- he's had 600-plus plate appearances in three consecutive seasons -- and is still only 25," Kelly continued. "Considering he won't be eligible to become a free agent until after the 2028 season, contenders will believe they can unlock him, both as a player and in terms of being a more mature human.
"Obviously, once the Dodgers signed Tucker, (Bo) Bichette joined the New York Mets," Kelly wrote. "Still, middle infield questions remain for Los Angeles, at least relative to other spots on baseball's most loaded roster."
Kelly also indicates that should the Dodgers get Abrams, then they could move shortstop Mookie Betts to second base. Additionally, if Los Angeles chose to keep Betts at shortstop, then Abrams could be at second base.
According to Baseball Reference, Abrams hit .257 last season with 19 home runs and 60 RBIs. His slash line last season was .315/.433/.748. Abrams has a career .249 batting average, too. Abrams has 59 career home runs and 210 career RBIs, too.
Abrams also can swipe a base when needed for Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, if he comes over to the West Coast. Abrams has 116 career stolen bases, so his speed could be a big asset in the Dodgers' lineup.
He started his MLB career with the San Diego Padres before joining the Nationals in the 2022 MLB season. Abrams has been with the Nationals for three-plus seasons.
So, should the Dodgers make a trade for Abrams at the MLB Trade Deadline, then he'd probably fit right in nicely to the lineup. Imagine Roberts having another speedy player to slot into his lineup card on a regular basis.
Don't be surprised if Abrams gets a ticket to help the Dodgers go for another World Series title. He might be a piece that adds another element to the ballclub at a time they'd probably need it.
