Count Blake Snell Out for Now With Los Angeles Dodgers cover image

Pitcher Blake Snell will not be ready by Opening Day for the Los Angeles Dodgers, manager Dave Roberts said.

While there might have been a little hope that Blake Snell could be ready to pitch by Opening Day for the Los Angeles Dodgers, that's not going to happen.

On Saturday, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the chances that Snell would be ready by then were "probably 0%" when speaking to reporters at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona.

Snell has been working hard to get back into condition for the 2026 MLB season. But his progress has not been steady enough. So, he'll not be in the starting rotation for the Dodgers when the season begins.

Cody Snavely (Canelo) of Dodgers Beat shared news about Snell, along with a tidbit about Emmet Sheehan, in a post on X on Saturday morning.

Snell has been dealing with lingering discomfort in his left shoulder, according to MLB.com Dodgers beat reporter Sonja Chen.

To more accurately share what Roberts said about Snell, Chen wrote what Roberts said in her article for MLB.com.

"He’s not on a mound right now. He’s not in games," Roberts said. "The odds of him starting the season are probably zero.”

So, that's straight from the skipper himself.

Snell gave a heads-up when speaking to reporters at Dodger Fest back in January that when he came into his first season with the Dodgers, his left shoulder didn't feel comfortable.

While Snell missed regular-season action, he did show up in a big way during the Dodgers' postseason run to a second straight World Series title.

According to Chen, he held opponents to 12 earned runs in 34 innings (3.18 ERA) across six appearances (five starts).

"Last year, I had so much to prove," Snell said on Jan. 31. "I got way too excited and was really pushing to get to spring, get through spring. This year, I'm going to be a little slower just in how I ramp up -- be a lot more smarter on that."

Chen also pointed out that Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shohei Ohtani, and Tyler Glasnow are positioned to be used by Roberts in a more traditional starting pitcher role. After that, though, it might be Roberts looking to plug and play some other starters in those other roles.

It's a tough thing for Snell to not have himself ready to go for Opening Day. His teammates probably are offering any kind of support and help that they can do. Yet it's on Snell to get his left shoulder comfortable and his throwing motion in sync before getting that first start in the 2026 MLB season.

So, Dodgers fans, it'll be a bit before Snell takes the mound at Dodger Stadium.
