Multi-run innings late catapulted Los Angeles Dodgers over hapless Los Angeles Angels in laugher.
For Los Angeles Dodgers fans looking to see if their team had any offense in the bats, they were quite pleased after the Dodgers totally embarrassed the Los Angeles Angels 15-2 on Saturday night as the Freeway Series continued at Angels Stadium in Anaheim, Calif.
The game actually was tight through five innings as the Dodgers held a slim 1-0 lead. But a pair of five-run innings in the sixth and ninth innings, along with a four-run eighth inning, secured the win.
Before getting to the hitting heroes, let's talk about Dodgers starter Justin Wrobleski. Wrobleski went six innings, giving up six hits, two earned runs, walked one, and struck out five. His record this season now goes to 6-1.
The Dodgers' bullpen was outstanding on Saturday night, with Blake Treinen, Wyatt Mills, and Charlie Barnes only giving up one hit while walking a combined three batters and striking out a combined two Angels.
Los Angeles jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Will Smith's sacrifice fly.
Then, at least for the Dodgers, things got fun.
Andy Pages coaxed a bases-loaded walk and that stretched Los Angeles' lead to 2-0. Max Muncy then got a bases-loaded walk off of Angels starter and loser Jose Soriano, putting the Dodgers up 3-0. Teoscar Hernandez was hit by a pitch, bringing home Will Smith and the lead bumped up to 4-0.
We're still in the sixth inning, folks. Alex Call singled to left, scoring Pages and Muncy and the rout was officially on at 6-0. The Angels scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on Jo Adell's double, bringing Zach Neto and Jorge Soler home and cutting into the Dodgers' lead at 6-2.
Let's go to the eighth inning where it looked like, at first, Shohei Ohtani had hit a three-run, inside-the-park home run.
Umpires, though, upheld a stadium boundary call. Muncy and Call scored, and Ohtani also crossed the plate as a throwing error from right fielder Adell came into play. The official scorer later ruled Ohtani's hit was a triple.
That put the Dodgers up 9-2. Mookie Betts then hit his fourth homer this season, a solo shot, and Los Angeles' lead went to 10-2.
And, well, we now go to the top of the ninth inning.
By the way, Angels reliever Alex Manoah worked 1 1/3 innings, surrendering six hits, nine runs (eight earned), walked three, struck out two, and surrendered Betts' homer.
While Manoah was in there, Muncy reached on a fielder's choice and a throwing error by Manoah figured into the play. Smith scored and Pages reached third base. The Dodgers went up 11-2. Hernandez had an infield hit and Pages scored to make it 12-2 Dodgers.
Ohtani then put the big bow on the victory as he doubled to right field with the bases loaded. Muncy, Hernandez, and Hyeseong Kim scored, making the final score 15-2. Angels second baseman Adam Frazier worked the final two-thirds of the top of the ninth, giving up one hit but getting the Dodgers out on an inning-ending double play.
With the big victory, the Dodgers go to 28-18 overall and are in first place in the National League West Division. As for the Angels, they are 16-30 and sit in last place in the American League West Division. Yes, the Angels are the first team to lose 30 games this season in the major leagues.
The Dodgers and Angels close out this chapter of the Freeway Series on Sunday afternoon at Angels Stadium.
