The Los Angeles Dodgers had to designate Jonathan Hernández for assignment to make room for the returning Brock Stewart.

The Los Angeles Dodgers' bullpen has been hanging on by a thread, and while it's not like getting Brock Stewart back is going to change everything, it's certainly a boost, especially now that Edwin Díaz is on the Injured List himself.

Stewart, 34, has an 0-1 record but strong 2.45 ERA this season. His 0.2 WAR doesn't tell the full story, but his 0.75 WHIP really puts things into perspective.

After missing nearly three weeks, Stewart is back in the fold, so the Dodgers had no choice but to make a corresponding move.

With no room on the roster, right-handed pitcher Jonathan Hernández was designated for assignment. Hernández will now seek his fourth team in three years, should anyone put in a claim for him at this point in the season.

What to expect from Stewart's return

The last time Dodgers fans saw Stewart was on Tuesday, July 28, in a game where he picked up his lone loss of the year. It was far from a brutal relief appearance. In fact, he only allowed one run on one hit in 1.1 innings of work. All things considered, that's a completely fine stat line, but on this occasion, that one run made all the difference.

Stewart has 11 scoreless appearances this season. The Dodgers have never asked him to pitch more than two innings, and it's crazy to think he only needed 22 pitches to record six outs on Sunday, July 19.

For reference, Díaz, someone this team is paying $69 million, has needed 20+ pitches to get out of his last three appearances, all of which have only been one inning.

As for Stewart, the Illinois native is one a one-year, $1.3 million deal, so it'll be interesting to see if LA decides to keep him around after the 2026 season. Obviously, his performances and health down the stretch will have a big say in that.

Dodgers had no room for Hernández

Hernández, 30, had a -0.2 WAR in his 16 appearances for the Dodgers this season. This is a bullpen that's had a ton of turnaround, and Stewart's return marks another DFA for a Dodgers reliever.

This time around, it just so happened to be Hernández, a righty who sported a 5.68 ERA in his 25.1 innings of work.

Despite throwing 7.2 scoreless innings in the month of August, Hernández only pitched in games where the Dodgers lost, and his 11.57 ERA in 11.2 innings the month prior was simply too much to ignore.
