The Los Angeles Dodgers are reacquiring catcher Hunter Feduccia from the Tampa Bay Rays after earlier landing Ben Rortvedt.
The Los Angeles Dodgers continued to reinforce their catching depth ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline, reacquiring Hunter Feduccia from the Tampa Bay Rays in a multi-player deal.
According to reports, the Dodgers received Feduccia along with minor-league pitcher Jacob Kmatz from Tampa Bay. In return, Los Angeles sent minor-league outfielder Jack Suwinski to the Rays while also including international bonus pool money as part of the transaction.
Feduccia is no stranger to the Dodgers' organization. The 29-year-old catcher was dealt to the Rays during the 2025 trade deadline last season as part of the trade that brought Ben Rortvedt to Los Angeles.
He now returns to the organization that originally drafted and developed him.
The timing of the acquisition is notable given the Dodgers' recent health concerns at catcher. Will Smith continues working his way back from a neck injury, while Dalton Rushing has missed consecutive games after being scratched from Sunday's lineup with an arm issue.
Although neither player's status appears to be long-term, the Dodgers have acted aggressively to ensure they have experienced options available should either catcher require additional time.
Through 60 games with the Rays this season, Feduccia batted .234 with two home runs and 12 RBIs while serving primarily as the club's backup catcher. His familiarity with the Dodgers' organization, coaching staff, and pitching philosophy should allow him to transition quickly if he is needed at the major-league level.
The Rays made Feduccia expendable earlier in the day after acquiring catcher Liam Hicks, creating a surplus behind the plate. Tampa Bay quickly turned that roster flexibility into additional organizational depth by acquiring Suwinski from Los Angeles.
For the Dodgers, the acquisitions of both Feduccia and Rortvedt reflect a clear emphasis on protecting one of the most important positions on the field. Rather than risk being shorthanded during the final two months of the regular season, the front office opted to stockpile experienced catching options capable of stepping into a major-league role.
While neither move carries the star power of a blockbuster MLB Trade Deadline acquisition, together they provide Los Angeles with valuable insurance behind the plate as the club prepares for another postseason push.
